darstog Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 If one were to be taking a group of about 15 high school students up to Squish for a week of cragging and camping, the focus being on interpersonal growth, where would be the primo campground (quiet, secluded, safe) to facilitate aforementioned growth and group bonding? Also, any recs re: specific crags to visit. Crags with a variety of climbs (gear and sport) from 5.7-5.12 (hey, I gotta have some fun, too). I have the guidebook and have spent a little bit of time at Squamish (in the "dirtbag" category of camping), but was hoping to hear some personal experience. Thanks! Quote
jmace Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Sounds like you need facilites for camping so Chief Campground or you could hang out at Porteau cove campsite and make a short drive. places to go where you wont be a nuisance and vice versa-Assuming you have to have a large group all at once Comic Rocks-not popular Murrin-Reasonably Popular Fatty Bolger and High Cliff area Krack Rock Elephants Arse area cant remember the crag names but in the area Octopus Garden-Popular of course the sport venues at Rogues and Chek are good places too although probably busy Stay Away from Burgers and Fries Neat and Cool Penny Lane Quote
pinner Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 I would move Murrin from the "reasonably popular" to "very popular" category, especially on weekends as it'c closer to Van. It's a fairly large area though. During the mid-week anywhere should be relatively quiet (at this time of year at least - when are you planning on coming?). if you get up to Octopus' Garden and there ain't a crowd, you've got a nice, open, secluded area with fantastic trad routes of varying grades. Of course, these traits often lead to crowds. For group bonding, bouldering is an easy option - trust fall activities mesh nicely with good spotting practices. Quote
mythosgrl Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 The Sugar Loaf at Murrin Park has some good beginner climbs on it (5.6-5.8 all trad). I wouldn't go there on weekends, though! Quote
G-spotter Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 There are several crags at Cal-chek with great sub-10 sport routes and a nearby Forest Service campsite with plenty of space. Quote
