HikerGirl98 Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 Was thinking of doing Mt. Olympus this Labor Day weekend. Anyone been up there recently? Would appreciate any advice/news before I set off. Quote
Bigtree Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 HikerGirl98, think about this guy who did it just over a year ago as you tick off the miles... http://cascadeclimbers.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Board=6&Number=719711&Searchpage=1&Main=53151&Words=olympus&topic=0&Search=true#Post719711 Have fun. silence Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 last we heard .. a couple of weeks ago .. fm the ranger who was at gm .. the summit block has a big moat (fm all the sun b-4) making access to the rock difficult to impossible on all the common routes -- so most climbers were only going as far as the false summit. also the cracks were just startin to open then .. but not bad.. and the chute on the trail just b-low gm is dicey .. as the trail was obliterated .. so it's necessary to drop down on steep loose scree, cross a gully and then up again to regain the trail .. best to call the wic for most current or better yet the hoh ranger station Quote
powdrx Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 Just got back last night. We summited on Saturday. Everything is great all the way up. Use the Crystal Pass variation and then over the False summit. The Summit rocks are indeed a challenge right now as there is one place you can access the rocks from the snow. The one bridge we used is falling fast. But the trail in is fine and the last avy chute before Glacier Meadows is fine... just have to drop down a little and back up to the trail on the far side. Much more rain up there and the summit rocks may be tough to get onto, unless you wanna climb from the bottom all the way up on crappy, loose rock with little protection. Definitely better done in July, but good luck!! Quote
drocka Posted August 27, 2008 Posted August 27, 2008 i am also planning on heading out to olympus over labor day weekend, but the weather is not exactly favorable at this point. just cold and wet and cloudy i suppose. it does seem like crystal pass and the moat are the uncertain points, let alone being socked in by clouds if NOAA is right.
