Good first trip of the year up to Muir?

With the currrent weather, and subsequent avy danger, any ideas on when might be a good date to make a first trip up to Muir? What type of weather should I be looking for, etc...?

 

I'm testing new boots and crampons, and use the hike up to Muir as a "get in shape" trip.

In light of the counterfietfake's post, any suggestions on compass/gps devices? I know, this is a can of worms already opened, but I thought I'd ask anyway.

Yes. I suggest a compass. Every time I go to Muir I keep one in my pack.
