dwillym Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 Any thoughts on how realistic a winter climb of South Sister is this month? I've never been down there but I'm thinking of doing it with a friend sometime in February if the weather/avalanche conditions are appropriate. Anybody have any advice on this, or where to find good avalanche info on that region? I've never been down there so I'm clueless. thanks- Quote
warrior1515 Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 Hwy. 46 that takes you to the TH of SS is closed till the summer. That means you will tack on an additional 4-6 miles. If you were able to park at the TH you are looking at a 12mile round trip when doing the South Side. Avy danger is high right now. Yes it will slide up on SS. Avy forecast: http://www.nwac.us/products/SABSEA Weather: http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/forecast/MapClick.php?minlon=-122.11&maxlon=-116.45&minlat=43.57&maxlat=47.67&mapwidth=354&site=pdt&map.x=36&map.y=330 Most people save SS for the spring. However, if you don't have a sled, you might be able to convince some slednecks to tow you to the Forest boundary line. Good luck Dave Quote
Mon_Col Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 OSU-Cascades in Bend is trying to get an avalanche center up and running for the C.O. Cascades. So far this winter there have been some hang-ups but you might want to check back in before you go to see if they've got the results from their pits up. http://www.osucascades.edu//studentlife/clubs/snowpackreport.php Quote
