Trip: Just say no to grizzlies -

Date: 1/17/2008

Trip Report:

No grizzlies, that is in Glacier national park this time of year.

OK, this may not be a trip for the hard core, but would be a fun few days for those interested.

On Wednesday, myself and the female snaffle hopped a train from Spokane to West Glacier. Awakening in the early morning, we were thrown from the warm train into the winter wonderland of West Glacier. The train was already moving again as we turned around, with a comment from the conductor "we don't stop here much in the winter, good luck".

Only a mile from Glacier NP gate, we skied along lake mcdonald to the avalanche picnic area, on the Going to the Sun road. Only a 12 mile ski, but great views, snow, and solitude. People don't visit here in the winter.

Duck the entrance fee if possible, cause the park offers no services in the winter other than fee collection!

We skied groomed xc trails at a nearby groomed area, interupted by a wild doggie skijoring race. Dogs and snaffles don't always get along, but they ignored us. Fun for the dogs mostly, especially the doggie drag race which ended in a massive tangle only 10 feet from the start with one dog gaining freedom for her solo victory lap.

Third day skiing along the flathead river, up a boundary trail into the Glacier wilderness, a long day, great animal tracks and views.

Hopped an evening train back to spokane after waiting for two hours outside next to the tracks in a blizzard. Snaffles are tough.
