pdawg Posted November 5, 2007 Posted November 5, 2007 I'm cooling my heels in Portland this week and hope to break free for some snow clomping. Has anyone been on the Hogsback recently? Quote
shortstow Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 have not, might want to check out the webcams Timberline Lodge has one Quote
pdawg Posted November 6, 2007 Author Posted November 6, 2007 Thanks, shortstow. Having never been on Hood, I'll do the approach regardless and post details tomorrow. Quote
iain Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 I skied up hood a week ago. There is good snow coverage from the top of the magic mile up, and you can piece together snow all the way to the paved road below silcox. Conditions are "firm". The main chute is quite steep and runneled right now. The old chute is more favorable, but there was a great deal of ice coming down from above. The schrund is wide open and gaping. Be aware of two large crevasses climber's right of Crater Rock. They are somewhat covered. At least one climber has had to be rescued out of there, and there were ski tracks over them. Enjoy. Quote
stoudema Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 (edited) I was up to about 9800 feet yesterday, just below the Hogsback. The snow was good corn up until there, where it started firming up. Here's a link to a TR from my snowboard outing with a few pics..... http://www.turns-all-year.com/skiing_snowboarding/trip_reports/index.php?topic=8092.0 Edited November 6, 2007 by stoudema Quote
rbw1966 Posted November 6, 2007 Posted November 6, 2007 I was up on the hogsback about a week ago as well. If you ski it, take rock skis. Lots of footprints going up to the bergschrund and lots coming right back down. As Iain noted, the old chute is the route of choice right now and even that requires trudging back onto scree before you get on the snow again. We need more a lot more coverage. Quote
