Doug Posted July 16, 2007 Posted July 16, 2007 (edited) Trip: Rainier - DC Date: 7/11/2007 Trip Report: A buddy of mine moved to Albuqerque about 10 years ago and in that time he's made friends with some like minded folks who wanted to climb Rainier. He asked if I'd help them get up there and I obliged. We threw in3 locals and made a team of 11. We stayed at Cougar Rock on the 8th and on the 9th headed up to muir in gorgeous conditions. We made it to Muir in good shape and stayed the night there, most in the hut but a couple of tents. We ended up leaving one of our party at Muir; he just didn't feel he could make it. The next day we got up and made a leisurely jaunt up to Ingraham Flats. The New Mexico folks experienced their first ever crevasse crossing on the Cowlitz and were impressed. We had a great day at the flats and all retired at 6:00 in anticipation of our midnight wake up call. When midnight came we were treated to beautiful conditions, virtually no wind at all! We headed out at 1:00 and took our first break at the top of the cleaver where we were all in awe of seeing the Northern Lights! What a spectacular sight! We left the cleaver and came upon a great crevasse crossing; from a snow bridge onto a serac, down and to the left with an off camber corner that was nicely exposed. Those New Mexico boys puckered on that one! A few hundred feet from that there was another bridge to serac to bridge to glacier crossing. Either the guide service or the park service set up pickets for running belays on that one. After that it was just the typical up and up and up till we hit the crater rim at 6:45 am. Great weather on the summit! THe trip down was mostly uneventful, albeit warm and slushy. One of the snow bridges (the one with the running belay) had collapsed sometime after we crossed on the way up, so a little route finding was needed on the way down. The steak at the Copper Creek in was great! Gear Notes: Typical glacier. Make sure you Bring your pickets Approach Notes: Typical Edited July 24, 2007 by Doug Quote
