Trip: mt baker - coleman

Trip Report:

made another try up baker via heliotrope/coleman. still cannot drive to trail, about 30-40 minute hike. made camp about 6500 and left for the summit with a big group (11 climbers)around 2:30am, reached 8500 feet around 5:00 am and in came a huge ass whiteout. decided to dig in and try to wait it out. after about an hour, people started to get cold and white out got worse. decended back down in heavy whiteout. lots of new snow. hours of postholing to just below the knee. our 11 person boot pack was totally filled in after only 2 hours. wait another few weeks before trying this one if you really want to summit. too bad, weather was beautiful in b-ham on sunday from what i heard. oh well, just more proof that the mountains make thier own weather.

oh yeah, the snow on the way down (from 6000 feet all the way to the creek crossing) absolutely sucked, total sunbacked, slick, fall on your ass, break your snowshoes, cascade crap. snow bridges over the creek crossings are probably done for the season. have fun out there kids...the north fork has thier red eye on tap, so that was good

So glad I played in the sun on Mount Erie. Thanks for the report, I was nervous to read how it was up there since I was not man enough to go up and see for myself.
