Dechristo Posted May 29, 2007 Author Posted May 29, 2007 forwarded from John Parsons: The 2007 Zack Martin Breaking Barriers Grant (ZMBB) has been awarded to Fabrizio Zangrilli and Billy Pierson. Congratulations guys...!! The Humanitarian Objective will implement the first phase of Girls Educational International, the Khane Village Girls School Renovation. Fabrizio and Billy will purchase , deliver and install materials that will renovate the school. In addition, they will provide various school supplies and provide a half year of salary for the local teacher. These Muslim women will benefit from this effort in many ways including a better school facility, a better general education, a greater understanding of world politics, introduction to understanding women's rights, enhanced health training and religious tolerance training. This is a grass roots effort that will be continued by Girls Educational International that can change the hearts and minds of Muslim women in Pakistan. The Alpine Objective will attempt a new, 2900m, direct route up the south face of K2 through mixed terrain for 2000', intersect with the Magic Line and continue to the summit. Alpine style climbing without oxygen will be the team tactics.....light and fast. IF YOU HAVE A HEART, ALL DONATIONS TO THE ZMBB GRANT FUND ARE MOST WELCOME AN APPRECIATED. Dechristo Posted August 20, 2007 Author Posted August 20, 2007 Zack Martin 2007 Grant Update Fabrizio Zangrilli, the 2007 ZMBB recipient, was turned back by bad weather after a 36 hour push to climb a new route on the south face of K2. He and his team may make another attempt but soon he will be headed to the Khane Valley in Pakistan for the humanitarian portion of the grant. To wit, to help build, outfit and partially hire a school teacher for children of the Khane Valley. Fabrizio will be working with Girls Educational International www.girlseducationinternational.blogspot.com GEI has done some prep work in Khane talking with the village women. The word is that most women in the village want the school and that they don't feel like taking the girls away from the work in the field will be detrimental to the community. Instead they feel like having the girls go to school will benefit the community. Additional Information: Journalist Lizzy Scully and North Face athlete Heidi Wirtz founded GEI, an international non-profit organization to help educate girls and assist with the construction, maintenance, and support of girls' schools around the world. Dechristo Posted September 25, 2007 Author Posted September 25, 2007 1) Update on the 2007 Zack Martin Grant Award 2) An offer for a great climbing rope that supports the HERA Ovarian Cancer Fund 3) Status Update From the 2006 Recipient 4) General Zack Martin Info And Donation Logistics 2007 Zack Martin Breaking Barriers (ZMBB) Recipient Update Brief Synopsis Of Alpine And Humanitarian Objectives The American Alpine Club Humanitarian Fund---- (ZMBB) is pleased to report that Fabrizio Zangrilli and his team attempted a new route up the south face of K2 and initiated the building of a school and funding of a teacher in the Khane Valley in Pakistan. Alpine Objective There were only two summit days over the whole season on K2 and Fabrizio and team were not staged to attempt a summit on a new route up the south face of K2. They climbed up to about 8000m but were turned back by weather. Also Fabrizio and team assisted in a minor rescue on the mountain. This was the third attempt at the south face for Fabrizio and Billy Pierson. They will return....to give K2 another chance to 'allow them to pass'. Humanitarian Objective From Fabrizio's trip report: "The Khane project was really one of the greatest 'adventures' of my life". Abbas (a village elder) and I had organized a "Village Day" at the school. I did this for two reasons: one to try and judge the people's enthusiasm for the school project and also it seemed an efficient way of meeting the village elders and the school committee. This event avoided most of the usual village politics of which house to hold meetings in, who would seem to be the most important elder, etc. Neutral ground seemed the best solution. Most the village's children - boys and girls - attended as well as over 50 adults. Khane has a total population of just under 500, since we were still in the trekking/expedition season I feel the turnout represented most of the adults (male- women do not attend such events) that could be present." Fabrizio worked with Girls Educational International and after agreeing with village elders the importance of education and the Khane Valley Project and action plan was developed and initiated for the girls school and teacher. For the detailed trip report see http://www.girlseducationinternational.blogspot.com/ and also check out http://www.girlsed.org/ HERA Ovarian Cancer Fund Ovarian cancer has a survival rate of 5% and 1 in 69 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer. The idea was to slow pollution of the high park areas and to reduce down stream pollution. The toilet has been a great success for many reasons and in particular because the locals have supported the project though not perfectly all the time. At any rate, much of the refuse is being carried down valley by the arrerios and used as compost for increase food production for both people and animals. Of course, removing hundreds (thousands) of pounds of human waste from the watershed is outstanding. From Adam French: "Dear Friends, Saludos from the Cordillera Blanca. I wanted to send an update from this year's Peruvian journey before any more time flies by. The trip began with several weeks of collaborative research with a team made up of my advisor from UC Santa Cruz, a glaciologist from Ohio State, a geochemist from McGill, myself, and a graduate student from OSU. I have been following up on the composting toilet we built in the Ishinca Valley last summer. This has been both a satisfying and frustrating process. On the positive side, the toilet is standing tall and has collected around 800-1000 pounds of waste, much of which undoubtedly would have entered the watershed otherwise.. Perhaps the greatest success is that, throughout the season, someone (I'm still not certain who) managed to switch the barrels as they filled. On the down side, there was not the needed attention to facilitating the composting process, which means we can't yet judge how well this system may work at altitude (testing this system for high-mountain use is one of the central goals of the project)." My last two weeks here will be filled with providing technical assistance to Huascaran National Park and planning activities for the Alpine Conservation Partnership (see http://www.americanalpineclub.org/pages/page/139'>http://www.americanalpineclub.org/pages/page/139 for further information). I may even get to sneak in a climb here or there, though I'm not holding my breath. Dechristo Posted December 14, 2007 Author Posted December 14, 2007 Dougal MacDonald at the America Alpine Club has added a great report written by Fabrizio Zangrilli (the 2007 recipient of the Zack Martin Breaking Barriers Award) to the AAC website. The report covers his visit to Khane, Pakistan to start and help fund a school for girls. Check it out at http://americanalpineclub.org/pages/story/5/62. Fabrizio attempted a new route on K2 and though he was unsuccessful he (and Girls Educational International) was successful starting a school for girls in the Khane Valley in Pakistan. Quote

Much to his satisfaction, the structure was standing tall and seeing plenty of use (roughly 800 pounds of waste had been contained rather than entering the watershed). In addition, Huascaran National Park and locals have adopted the new system and would like to replicate it in other areas of the park. The next step for the coming summer is for the "compost" to be used in local pasture improvement and reforestation efforts. More money is needed if you have an interest in donating. The Ishinca Toilet project was brought under the umbrella of the Alpine Conservation Partnership's developing work in the region. A long form grant proposal will be due by Apr 15, The award will be announced by mid-May <<...>> Zack Martin Breaking Barriers Grant http://americanalpineclub.org/grant/zackmartin'>http://americanalpineclub.org/grant/zackmartin The Zack Martin Breaking Barriers Grant (ZMBB) is a dual-purpose grant fund. The primary objective is humanitarian and the secondary objective involves adventure, discovery, alpinism and/or climbing. The grantee must meet both objectives and is strongly encouraged to obtain additional funding. The humanitarian objective must be reasonable, and sustainable. Objectives that continue after implementation will receive the highest level of consideration. Focus the objective to affect the greatest human change. See a list of AAC supported humanitarian organizations here. The alpine objective should focus on climbing and exploration but need not be at the leading edge of climbing or alpinism. Zack Martin died just before his 25th birthday on Thanksgiving Day 2002. He was a recipient of AAC grants, the Anatoli Boukreev grant and others. Zack was concerned about the general arrogance and self-serving aspirations of climbers and explorers. He committed that on all future expeditions he would not only climb and explore but more importantly he would perform humanitarian service in the local community. He would "break a barrier" in the alpine environment and "break a barrier" in the heart of man. As Zack often said, "The only barrier holding you back is yourself." Purpose The Zack Martin Breaking Barriers Grant (ZMBB) is a grant fund with a dual purpose. The grant supports climbing and exploration in the alpine environment and coincidentally sponsors humanitarian and community outreach activities. Alpine proposals that focus on unclimbed or unexplored alpine terrain will receive special consideration especially lightweight and unsupported teams. Repeats of difficult or historic routes will also be considered heavily. However, the alpine objectives do not need to be at the leading edge of alpinism to receive this grant. Of equal or greater importance is the proposal for humanitarian activity. The primary consideration will be humanitarian and community outreach activities that meet the greatest human need in the local area of choice. It is not required that the alpine and humanitarian activities be in the same immediate local but in the same region is desirable. Donate to the Zack Martin Breaking Barriers Grant How can you contribute? Donations for the Zack Martin Breaking Barriers Fund can be made via check or credit card. Checks must be made to The American Alpine Club with an attention to the ZMBB fund. The American Alpine Club is a 501©(3) non-profit organization and all donations to this fund are tax-deductible. http://americanalpineclub.org/ Quote
Dechristo Posted May 11, 2009 Author Posted May 11, 2009 The AAC is proud to announce the 2009 ZMBB (Zack Martin Breaking Barriers) grant recipients, Clint Estes and Matt Hepp. Clint and Matt are going to Pakistan. Their humanitarian objective is to provide instruction, building plans and materials for earthquake resistant housing that uses affordable local materials. The AAC, and this Committee Chair, are hopeful that Clint and Matt will actually build a home and document the process. Doing this would allow the locals to replicate the process and provide the knowledge for other interested parties to do likewise. For their alpine objective they will climb a new (hopefully multiple) new alpine rock routes in the Kondus Valley. This area is located in Northeast Pakistan, near the Pakistan-India border, and was recently opened for climbing and mountaineering. The rock towers of the Kondus valley are impressive monoliths that stand up to 6,500 meters high. Please join me and congratulate Clint and Matt as the 2009 ZMBB Grant recipients. Regards John Parsons ZMBB Committee Chair Quote
