fheimerd Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 Trip: mt. hood - white river canyon Date: 1/19/2007 Trip Report: Took a solo trip up the white river glacier. In the morning the snow down low was suprisingly light without an noticable crust. Things quickly changed as a warm wind picked and I headed up the canyon. Creek crossing is doable but hard to find. Variable soft snow till 7000 and then withier boiler plate ice or wind buff. I had to kick steps up boiler plate ice with ski boots fot the last 300 ft. By the time I made it back down to the lower section of the canyon the soft snow had turned to curst and the skiing was somewhat callenging. So basically if your planning to head out don't expect great snow on mt. hood till the next dump. Car to car 5 hours, 4400 vertical feet Gear Notes: at boots were a plus next time I'm bringing crampons Approach Notes: creek crossing in but hard to find Quote
