Trip: Mt. St. Helens - Wormflows/Monitor Ridge

Date: 1/14/2007

Trip Report:

Hiked up and boarded down Mt. St. Helens on Sunday. Route is well-consolidated and in good shape. Established boot pack most of the way up. Some icy wind-scoured sections of the ridge could be sketchy without crampons but people were making it work in snowboard/ski boots. Clear skies and low winds made for a beautiful day, recent sustained cold temps made for some light & fluffy powder to be had.

The top 1/3 and lower 1/3 of the ride down was buttery smooth fluffy or slightly wind-packed powder. The middle 1/3 was pretty crusty but rideable. Possible to ride from the crater's edge all the way down to Marble Mtn parking lot.

That new lava structure inside the crater is massive and impressive!

Gear Notes:

Ski poles, crampons nice for hard/icy sections of ridge but not absolutely necessary.

Approach Notes:

Fairly well-established skin track/boot pack from car most of the way to the summit.

I'm heading there next week. Could I get some info on parking? Did you park at Marble Mtn. parking lot? Any other useful info would be nice also, but mainly where to park, since I have never been there.

You park at Marble Mt. snow park. When you get there, there is a lot for vehicles without trailers. It is to the right before turning into the smokey lot with lots of noisy machines.

They ask you to park there if you are not pulling a trailer. A lot of climbers don't but it always cracks me up that people going to climb Mt St. Helens, can't walk 100 yds to the trailhead.

I would much rather park where there is fresh(er) air. Then walk through the smokey lot past the bathrooms and warming cabin to the trailhead in about the middle of the parking lot on the far side.
