Big_Mac Posted December 17, 2006 Posted December 17, 2006 Press conferance-- wish I knew wether they found a 1 person or 3 person cave?
Hoping4Today Posted December 17, 2006 Posted December 17, 2006 Press conference on CNN now... Â Tiffany again - Â The snow cave gives us hope, they obviously knew what to do and they can do it again. Â Probably making a plan to take climbers off mountain - don't know whether anyone will stay up there tonight. Â Seems they hunkered down in the snow, survived for awhile, then got out - doesn't mean they didn't dig another snow cave somewhere else. Â Don't know how deep the cave was.
zl27 Posted December 17, 2006 Posted December 17, 2006 Found:  2 ice axes one sleeping bag rope probably other stuff that didn't get communicated to him No climbers Footprints were leading up  Snow cave tells them they knew what to do and they can do it again. Thinks they tried to self rescue and then had to dig another snow cave somewhere.
XXX Posted December 17, 2006 Posted December 17, 2006 Sounds discouraging. At least the shovel is gone.
Big_Mac Posted December 17, 2006 Posted December 17, 2006 looks like the freaking helo is landing on the SUMMIT!!!!!
Lambone Posted December 17, 2006 Posted December 17, 2006 I wonder why they'd leave a sleeping bag? perhaps it was soaked wet and useless...still could be used as an insulator on the floor of a cave though... Â looks like the freaking helo is landing on the SUMMIT!!!!! Â probly evacing some rescuers before nightfall. it's going to be a cold night up there. Â Â
Ruedi Posted December 17, 2006 Posted December 17, 2006 They need to fly the C130 in a wider sweep around the base of the mountain to look for targets.
answer Posted December 17, 2006 Posted December 17, 2006 what the fuck...why would they leave their bags and tools...doesn't make sense. hypothermia
LHwildcats76 Posted December 17, 2006 Posted December 17, 2006 I'm not worried about the bag. If the three are together, they could be sharing a bag to stay warm. Maybe moved up with a break in the weather, or who knows, partially down the other side. Once you're that high, is the worst of the north side climb over? Going up from there might be easier than going back down north face.
Big_Mac Posted December 17, 2006 Posted December 17, 2006 press conf done now the BS begins again-talking heads and ignorant AH's
johns Posted December 17, 2006 Posted December 17, 2006 What makes them think there was more than one in the cave?
LHwildcats76 Posted December 17, 2006 Posted December 17, 2006 Now they are saying sleeping bag OR Pad We know Kelly used blue pads. There's a pic of one on the top of his backback in one of the internet circulated photos, the one where he is hugging his wife or then girlfriend.
gslater Posted December 17, 2006 Posted December 17, 2006 I'm curious if they found ice axes, or perhaps pickets... I keep hearing/seeing "ice picks", which means absolutely nothing. Â If axes were still there, not good, because I can't imagine leaving without those. If pickets were there but no axes, then perhaps good.
msquared Posted December 17, 2006 Posted December 17, 2006 Seems like they were ditching some of the heavier/bulkier items. If they were going to head down to Timberline as planned, they wouldn't need as much rope (assuming they had more than they left.)
randyfranklin Posted December 17, 2006 Posted December 17, 2006 Link to the live news feed on KATU.com: http://www.katu.com/news/live/3882262.html  It will prompt you to install a plug-in called Abacast (and possibly require you to restart your browser). The plug-in installs a "video server" on your computer so if you are running a tight firewall setup then you may need to add it to the allowed list of servers running on your computer.  Please keep transcribing news reports from CNN.com and Foxnews.com - that will help us all get a 360 degree information view.     Â
Hoping4Today Posted December 17, 2006 Posted December 17, 2006 Anyone have a picture of the Y/V/shape? I'm confused, I see a large drift/formation pointing toward the summit but seems too large/steep to have been man-made.
Sbwood007 Posted December 17, 2006 Posted December 17, 2006 I am a newbie, but I thought you never leave your ice ax? Â Â
Hoping4Today Posted December 17, 2006 Posted December 17, 2006 I'm curious if they found ice axes, or perhaps pickets... I keep hearing/seeing "ice picks", which means absolutely nothing. If axes were still there, not good, because I can't imagine leaving without those. If pickets were there but no axes, then perhaps good.  They (SD, news, etc.) went back and forth between "axes" and "picks" - they seem to be talking about axes.
MauiHawk Posted December 17, 2006 Posted December 17, 2006 But does it makes sense that equipement would be left behind if the cave was left for good intentionally?
LHwildcats76 Posted December 17, 2006 Posted December 17, 2006 Anyone comment on how fresh the tracks look? Could they have been left there today?
