valleydude Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 (edited) Climb: Mt. Shasta-Avalanche Gulch Date of Climb: 7/7/2006 Trip Report: Began at Bunny Flats on 7/7/06, 10:00am. Bivy at Helen Lake. Reached the summit 10:00am 7/8/06. The trail was mostly clear up to the Sierra Club Hut. Beyond there, cupped and melting snow with portions of exposed rock. Snow was too wet for skins to grab hold and had to carry the splitboard up, no big, just slower. The bivy area at Helen was in good condition but a little soggy in places. We stepped from Helen at 4am, probably should have left at 2-3am as the snow got soft quickly. Our route up and through the Banks had plenty of good steps, lots of traffic that day. Misery Hill still had plenty of ridable snow on the NE side. Stashed the board and pack about 100yds from the final scramble to the top, pictures, laughs, awesome views of Lassen and Mcgloughlin. Sweet ride down on the voile from Misery Hill to the Hut. First 14-er, stoked. Next up: Rainier. Gear Notes: Bucket, axe, crampons, poles, splitboard, layers, lots of UV35.
