northwest
Is there anybody out there that might have recent information on access(Phelps Creek, or otherwise) and conditions(what is the snow like if there is any). Looking to climb next week. Thanks

philfort
The Chiwawa road is a groomed snowmobile route, closed to cars in winter at Fish Lake (but the "gate" is just a large moveable sign): http://www.parks.wa.gov/winter/parks/motorparks.asp?Park=113 "Snow not expected to last this weekend because of unseasonably high temperatures. Trails being evaluated." But I doubt you'd be able to get anywhere close to the summer trailhead in a car in winter (it's 23 miles from the closure) - the snowpack is a lot more reliable and persistent there than it is on the west side. btw, Maude is in the N Cascades, not Alpine Lakes Edited January 30, 2005 by philfort
