I'm going to Red Rocks late October and was wondering if anyone had recommendations on places to stay. (We're not going to be camping.) I really want to avoid the casino thing and the strip if possible. A cheap, clean, independently owned type place with kitchenettes and on the west side of town would be ideal.

This is a tall order. You might look online for condos that may be for rent.

Otherwise, there are a few small hotels on the west side. I believe there is some type of "normal" Best Western type hotel on Sahara and Fort Apache. The Casino on that side of town, nearest Red Rock is the Suncoast. There is a Marriot type place next door. Within the next year or so there will be a casion/hotel ten minutes from the gates to RR called Red Rock Station.

I stayed at Arizona Charlies as well on my last trip. It's a good cheap option, though definitely a casino. You have to wade through some of the thickest cigarette smoke I've ever seen in the lobby, but they do have non-smoking rooms, so you can get away from it. On one occasion our shower wasn't very warm and the temperature kept fluctuating. We complained and they gave us half-off our room rate or something like that.

They have cool light fixtures too (see attachment).

thanks for the advice. We've got kind of a big group, so I'm trying to rent a house/condo as 1st choice. Unfortuantely it's hard to find anything other than McMansions in gated communities going for mega $$$.

AZ charlie's looks like a good backup if I don't find anything.

There are a few hotels out where the parkway meets the interstate, which is where DFA and posse stayed last year. Distance-wise, it's sorta far, but time-wise, it's pretty quick, ca. 20 minutes to the crag. Plus there's a Wild Oats and an In-n-Out out there. Hooked up a good deal through travelocity.com .

Red Rocks beta. Go to the rock climbing gym/shop, the owners and employees are really friendly and know the beta and a half on everything going on in Vegas. And, a way cool Gym if its too hot. You can bail off a 25 ft. ceiling onto these trick pads and you won't get hurt thumbs_up.gif

DFA,

Ha! that is 45 seconds from my house...

Compared to Seattle area crags, anywhere in Vegas is close! We can be at the second pullout in 20 minutes.

Also, don't forget the Trader Joes on Buffalo and Washington.
