Oh Boy....where do I start ? The opponents to this repair are preparing an appeal . If that fails , they may litigate . Endless delays could spin us into a new US Administration , and back to the days of the "Justice" Dept. being told not to win certain cases . The opponents to this repair are well connected Wilderness advocates . They are organized and can generate mass mailings . I hope that you will follow the issue and get ALL YOUR FRIENDS writing letters to the NFS address given in this posting above...

Thanks a Bunch.....ken shock ( sailBOI )

Thanks for the info Sailboi! Exactly which group(s) are contesting this? It is exactly this kind of shit that turned me AGAINST the so-called 'environmental movement' over a decade ago. I was not aware that there was organized resistance to such a simple and logical road repair. (...But then who ever said these guys were driven by logic.) I'll write! Thanks again, and keep me up to speed on any public hearings to which I can lend my support/presence to your cause.

Here you go , you can see for yourself ! They are attempting to obtain more wilderness defacto , knowing that Congress would never cut this public access off . The method they are using is to misrepresent the repair as "Old Growth Logging" , to push the buttons of folks that have never been to this place , and get lots of letters sent in.

I have the Process Records for this case and hardly any of the letters opposing the repair are from Jefferson County !!

Opponents say:

The way to deal with these guys is to get all your friends and relatives to write as described above.

Spend a bit of time with our web site...we are advocating restoration of the old Dosewallips Trail . The ONF have given us a thumbs up on this. Check this out :

Wow! Thanks for the links SB. Here is a sample of their bullshit. Unbelievable! How many recreationalists are they willing to alienate, and at what ultimate cost to the very causes they hope to promote long-term. Short sighted idiots, all....

"Deep in the habitat of the endangered Northern Spotted Owl—along the Dosewallips River where it flows through Olympic National Forest, just 35 miles west of Seattle—the Bush administration is gearing up to log off hundreds of trees—some believed to date to the time of Columbus. The old trees are only a tiny part of what's at risk on the Olympic Peninsula: if Team Bush gets its way, the entire Dosewallips watershed will be put at risk....

The old growth trees in question have not even been surveyed for endangered spieces, and yet their statement above leads one to believe they have. The area in question is not in a protected wilderness area. And "team Bush" is at fault, of course - not local folks who just want to maintain traditional access. rolleyes.gif

How do these people sleep at night?

Not sure how they sleep !

If they succeed , they will have taken away access , to the Eastern entry of one our finest NATIONAL PARKS , for all but the most physically fit !

The first rate facilities at Muscott Flats and the Dose Ranger Station , which are upgraded for handicapped , will be inaccessable to the young , elderly , physically impared and handicapped . This closure also eliminates a number of day hikes for city folks , and makes trans Olympic climb/hikes more difficult/impossible to plan if there are time constraints .

The actions of these few groups are thwarting Democracy , by utilizing convoluted environmental regulations , in ways they were never intended . The average American taxpayer would be quite upset if they knew this story....!

The average Jefferson County resident is more than upset , as many of us are out here because of the access , or depend on tourism for income . madgo_ron.gif

Presently , I can no longer take my grandaughter or my mom to the Park , which had been part of Brinnon culture and economy for 70 years cry.gif

Sheeesh !! Just what "wilderness values" IF ANY, might contributors to this thread actually support?

I was delighted when the east side wilderness areas were established in the latter 1970s---I find this thread gravely disheartening.

Morality compells me to suggest that "brinnonprosperity.org" so helpful & concerned about the mountaineering constituency, is a shill for local real estate interests and their lackeys. In a word to the wise, all rather tough on the landscape.

You live on the east coast and presume to tell us how to live and what wilderness values are? Then you have the audacity to ask for info regarding the Stone Ponds Traverse on another thread?

I'll tell you what....The road has been decomissioned. Environmental lawyers will not allow a repair to be completed. Wilderness values 'n all, ya know. Stay home. moon.gif

Dear Sailboy:

Share with Your Mother (for the moment, we don't have to). Also your comment re. Justice Dept, now run by Mr. Ashcroft, is an unclear point in light of Dubyah telling Justice Department not to defend roadless area roadbulding rules in court. Could you be more specific about President Clinton's failings on matters pertaining to wilderness mountaineering maintenance and access issues?
