Peter_Puget Posted March 12, 2004 Posted March 12, 2004 Should this expansion of consumer choice be banned or restricted? Note that 86% picked the outsourced option! Link Quote
willstrickland Posted March 12, 2004 Posted March 12, 2004 Funny Pete, I didn't get the same interpretation. What I read said: "a consumer direct lender, today announced that home equity customers designated to its Indian outsourcing program have the power to decide whether they want to participate before they complete their application. So they are designated to be processed by the outsoucred labor before they even file an app? What does this "decide to participate" mean? Is simply filing an application that says in fine print on page 37 that if you submit the application it will be processed by an outsourced partner...is that "deciding to participate" Is there an option on these applications that clearly allows a choice between domestic and outsourced processing? "Testing shows that 86 percent of the customers designated for the program are choosing to take advantage of the faster processing time associated with it -- the ability to close their home equity loan in ten days versus twelve days" Keep in mind, this is a press release from the company, not a news story. Without knowing how the customer "decides" whether to participate, or what information the customer is provided with re: the outsourcing, these findings mean diddly fuckin squat. 86% eh? What do you figure is the percent of people in any home equity loan situation who get the paperwork, but never file the app for whatever reason? Quote
Peter_Puget Posted March 12, 2004 Author Posted March 12, 2004 Will - I don't get your point. Customers were offered a choice and most chose to go with the offshore option. I should say that the point of my post was to ask a question regarding whether this expansion of consumer choice be banned or restricted. What's your take on this? Quote
willstrickland Posted March 12, 2004 Posted March 12, 2004 My point is we don't know anything about the "choice", or whether it's a choice at all. Clearly a question on the application that says "Would you prefer that your application be processed: A) By U.S. sources and labor, in approximately 12 days, or B) By outsourced foreign labor in approximately 10 days"...now that would be a choice. But is it really a "choice" if the application simply says something to the effect of "if you choose to submit this application, it will be processed by offshore sources", most likely buried in fine print amongst the terms and conditions? I'd like see the application. My take on banning/restricting it: Shouldn't be done. I'm a "less govt" type. Outsourcing isn't going away. Democrats' pie in the sky ideas about restricting outsourcing will probably do more harm than good. "But what about the jobs!" people are screaming. Seems like the coming mass retirement of the boomers will offset alot of the outsourcing. Personally, I don't think the unemployment rate is too high, certainly not in a historical context. The thing that concerns me more thant the rate is the time people spend in an unemployment status. It's taking longer and longer for people to find work. But that's just another reflection of the increasing specialization of our jobs and knowledge bases. Any way you cut it, you can't eat oil. Until we fuck up the environment to the point that our food production suffers, the US will be fine. I'm still voting for Kerry. Quote
