Climb: Wallowas-Wing Ridge Ski

Date of Climb: 1/8/2004

Trip Report:

A few weeks back i had the distinct pleasure of heading out to the land of TG to participate in an avy 1 course offered by Wing Ridge Ski Tours (www.wingski.com). The drive out to Enterprise sucked major arse... this was days after the BIG WINTER BLAST... so 9 hours after leaving bend, I finally arrived in Enterprise.

The first day was spent in the classroom, ehhh, bleeeeh, kinda lame, but the evening was plab thanks to TG's fine crafts, and his generous hospitality.

Saturday, the class headed up to the Wing Ridge Huts. The tour is very quick, only about 2 miles up from the TH.

The Huts are canvas tents, sheltered by a-frames. Each one equiped with a toasty wood stove, bunks, plenty o firewood, and sleeping pads. The cooking tent is decked out with cooking utinsels, so all one needs is their skiing gear, and beer of choice.

The course in the field was pretty good. Had the chance to play with many different types of beacons, practice the multiple burial... all the while with the beauty of the Wallowas all around me. The first day we got to ski the burn just below the huts. There was only about 3' of snow on the ground, so it wasn't the most enjoyable turns of the season, but still plab.

The second day we got to make some better turns higher up. Yo-yo laps, and then back to the huts for a tasty dinner, followed by a trip to the sauna tent.... life was good.

The course overall was good, the huts/area is absolutely fantastic. Excellent terrain, just needs a bit more snow... am going to have to get back there in the spring for sure.

A good time was had by all!
