Peter_Puget Posted December 15, 2003 Posted December 15, 2003 Dryad, the answer will depend to a larg extend on the types of batteries you are charging. Quote
Lambone Posted December 15, 2003 Posted December 15, 2003 Check West Marine boating supplies, they have some good small ones for sail and motor boats that'd probly work for you. Quote
dryad Posted December 15, 2003 Author Posted December 15, 2003 (edited) Oops, I forgot that there are lots of different kinds... I'll be charging AA batteries, 4 at a time would be plenty, and I want something small and portable to strap to my pack to soak up the sun while hiking. Edited December 15, 2003 by dryad Quote

Mont-Bell used to sell one that was quite nice for just that purpose. Don't know what happened to it. Quote
Crackbolter Posted December 15, 2003 Posted December 15, 2003 Here is an inexpensive model. Keep looking around though because for about $10 or $15 more, you can get a slightly more durable model. This one looks a little fragile but it does do 4 AA's in 12 hours of daylight. Quote
dryad Posted December 15, 2003 Author Posted December 15, 2003 Did a little looking and found a couple... REI has one but it's expensive and heavy. Campmor has a cheap and light one, but the durability is questionable. Neither website shows the back of the unit. I'd like one that has some kind of clip or strap for easy pack attachment. Quote
Crackbolter Posted December 15, 2003 Posted December 15, 2003 Brunton has a thin solar powered sheet that is sweet and exactly what you are looking for but it is like $400. The other Brunton is probably your best bet. When staying at a hostel, you can put it under a lamp overnight and your batteries will be good to go in the morning. This eliminates carrying the international plug adaptor. Quote
cj001f Posted December 16, 2003 Posted December 16, 2003 These are what I was talking about: https://www2.montbell.com/english/asp/products/Spg_shosai.asp?cat=3402&hinban=1124114 and https://www2.montbell.com/english/asp/products/Spg_shosai.asp?cat=3402&hinban=1124113 Quote
Crackbolter Posted December 16, 2003 Posted December 16, 2003 Those are well over $100. Not a very good price when for a lower cost, you can just buy disposables. Thanks for showing that though. I want one now. Quote

No, decidely not cheap - the 5.4V is over $300! Like all the Mont-bell stuff they're lightweight, pack small, and well designed. I'm curious if the Boulder store even carries them. Part of the appeal of a battery charger for a longer trip is less weight. Gadgets take batteries, batteries aren't light. Quote
