salbrecher Posted March 14, 2003 Posted March 14, 2003 I'm considering going to school in kamloops next year but don't know if I could do without the coast mountains for 8 months of the year. I don't really know Kamloops all that well and have only driven through it once. I'll be up there this summer to take a look around but was wondering in the meantime if anybody has any, ANY reason why Kamloops could satisfy my recreational needs PLEASE tell me! Is there even any ice to climb in winter or is it to dry? How about rockclimbing, even a 100ft choss pile would be a start. Just gimme something to work with. Quote
Dru Posted March 14, 2003 Posted March 14, 2003 dude, kamloops is closer to the duffy lake road peaks than white rock is. and to marble canyon and rogers pass and skaha and the stein valley and wells gray etc. but the cragging within citry limits is marginal lots of single pitch stuff but nowhere near destination sun peaks aka mt tod is an hour from town Quote
Mer Posted March 14, 2003 Posted March 14, 2003 You got some rock close to town. It's not amazing huge, but it's there. Check the central BC rock book as a starting place and sniff around for info about ice routes on the Coquihalla. Dru's right about the location, within a few hours in every direction there are interesting things. Good snow/alpine in Rogers pass, good rock in the okanagan (Vernon, Kelowna are never overrun like Skaha.) You can go west or east for ice depending on conditions. What makes it good is that you always have options. The only wierd thing about Kamloops is that all the climbers seem to eventually turn into mountain bikers. It's a big drain on the partner pool. Beware being sucked into the biking vortex, oh yeah and watch out for that paddling thing too. Quote
Dru Posted March 14, 2003 Posted March 14, 2003 you can climb the clay cliffs with ice tools too. Quote
snoboy Posted March 14, 2003 Posted March 14, 2003 Kamloops is in the middle of everything. Not too much in town, but not too far from anything. One of the reasons the Adventure Tourism program is based there. I have climbed there at the Beach, and at Roche Lake. They are both OK sport crags. If you go to the gym called Rope's End they have some topos of the area, and will point you in the right direction. Roger's Pass is not to far for w/e trips, Squamish is about 4-1/2 hours over the duffy. What you schooling there? Quote
salbrecher Posted March 15, 2003 Author Posted March 15, 2003 (edited) I'm pretty sure i'm doing the adventure tourism managment degree. I think I'm to late for registration for this year. have to call and find out more about it though. Edited March 15, 2003 by salbrecher Quote
