I don't think 2 groups of 4 is "massive". It was a great night to climb though; I'm surprised more people didn't make the trip. I bet a total of 12 people summited for the whole day. Water - we need GD sleds.

Last week was warm....Seem like tonight is not much different..Last week started at 10:30 to hit the summit at sunrise, great timing. This week going a bit later at night. One tool, two trekking poles and a sled.
Don't know who the dude was with no helmet - At least I got a tight image. See you tonight!

Sorry to hear about the friend, last weekend we saw a guy get hit real hard on the chute traverse. From what I have heard about the weekend...It has not snowed, the snowpack has settled a bit and it's now freezing on the chute. I hope it't true...Going up Monday night again. No sled on the way down though...

Man, I'm not putting my foot in my mouth again on THIS issue! Water and I had a great climb last weekend - We did leave early and traverse fast. That was the key I feel. No one cried, no one died. And he had a COLD beer for me at the end!

Just a quick Photo of the fall line for those who don't know...
This was taken from the "poop deck" on the Hogsback. I'm not sure of the distance of the fall (500ft sounds correct), but if you follow where the climbers are on the "top" of the back, they are about to traverse left. You may have to increase the contrast to see the path. I believe that is where the fall started. If correction is needed; feel free to reply. This is also in the first hour after the fall, notice the sun is not yet up. Wishing John a speedy recovery.

Is there a rock route at Ill-rock? We noticed a couple people that camped were walking on the east of the rock looking to climb? Sounds great; if anyone has info on this......

After looking at all the past posts, this seems to be norm for crowded days on the SS. No biggie though; we all are more alike than anyone we probably spend the weekdays with. That's one reason this sport is great; diversity. We can all have a beer after the weekend is over and tell our workmates about our "hike" when they ask.
Just to change the subject a bit: Rocky, I noticed a sled in your photo "83"; did it work well? The disk I took this weekend just shattered and pinched "one of the boys".

As a Mazama and BCEP assistant; no kidding man! It's the southside - it IS like the mall. At least we can climb all the other peaks with friends and not just stick to SS hood for the rest of our lives. NO disrespect to anyone else.

Just to add Frik, the Chute was a debris field at 5am too, REALLY bad at 6am on the way down. I'm sure it just got worse after that. Let's all wait till it freezes again.

Water and I summited early. Frik; 10am seems late, I like the running part though! We did see someone get hit hard in the face with ice; climbers should remember that when the party above yells ICE that they should not look up. Hate to hear about the fall, it looked bad.

My plan is to summit via the chute at the same time. We are leaving cave at 11pm. The time down...record time in the sled; after the tallboy.

Yeah, there is an other post (with pictures) from last week. I think one screw and a second tool would do it. If others are with you, they or you may want to be belayed up for safety. 8 to 10ft wall, I heard. Sounds great - We're taking the chute though....maybe next time.

I've got a party of 5 or so leaving at 11pm. With all the people, I don't want to be heading up the chute it while people are coming down. Looking at the weather; what alt will it be freezing at?
P.s. Don't touch the Sled of Death parked at the hogsback - that's my way down.

August 24th last year at cold springs was packed. I think I remember parking IN a camp site. You are camping at the Lunch Counter also, right?

I read both your past Tr's. This is the year I'm learning how to tele - We have to go if your serious about the camel lights, PBR, and gaterade. Anyway - are you hitting Hood this weekend?
I am planning on hitting it up, and most likely on Saturday. The weather looks like it's going to be great!

Looking for a person to share the south side-pain with this weekend the 23rd. I'm thinking of leaving Saturday from PDX before noon. Leave the lodge, head up normal south side route, take a left to Illumination saddle. Set up bivy, open a tall boy and maybe wake up early for a summit attempt - Not counting on a summit, just need some leg work before Rainier. Interested? Bring your own tent and pillow, sucka.
