  1. Two things i've found very useful on the mountain.

Surefire G2 flashlight. Can't beat it for routefinding at night. Small, lightweight and very bright.

Platypus 4L or 6L water tank. I carry it collapsed to high camp, then melt snow, or get water to fill it, and I've got plenty for cooking, for the morning and after the summit.

  2. I'm assuming that since jmo only called off the trip *after* reading Josh's trip report on NWHikers, it is safe to assume that Josh was not honest with jmo regarding his (Josh's) level of experience, nor did Josh describe his recent attempts.

    That's totally f*cking weak.

I wouldn't say that.... if you really want, I could spill out the PM's.

That won't help your case any.

  3. Probably not neccesary, but I usually bring 4 of each for myself. 2 lockers on the harness, one on the snow picket, a non locker on the chest harness plus some spares of each. IF you use the hauling system at least 1/3 of your gear is hanging in the ice, so it's only 8 and 8.

This stuff should be obvious common knowledge around here, but it seems he had a bad experience.

  4. I climb with the same rope, so I read this with interest and decided to take mine out today. I used muenter on a BD quicksilver and it held my weight on rappel with no problems.

  5. I'm interested but can't commit just yet, and I'll only be free after friday afternoon.

I made 3 attempts on Rainier last year. All 3 were on the DC. Two were aborted due to weather and the third was successful. I've also summited Adams (Mazama glacier) and Baker.

I have all the required personal gear, plus a jetboil stove, an Edelweiss 8mm x 30m rope and two Coyote pickets.

I'm not in the shape it like to be in though. I'll probably won't be too fast getting to Muir with the big pack, but once I drop some weight there I'll be fine.

  6. One thing that I found very useful is a collapsible water tank by Platypus or similar. I carried it empty up to Muir and then melted snow to fill it so I didn't have to melt any in the morning. It's nice to have extra water to use in the morning. Or some waiting when you get back to high camp.
