  1. I am looking into getting a new helmet and wonder what people consider the best helmet. Best fitting? Easiest to attach a light? Toughest? etc...

I have been looking at the Petzl Ecrin Roc and the Black Diamond Half Dome. The Petzl is ~$78 while the BD is only ~$58. Is the Petzl really worth the 20 extra bucks?

    Any thoughts?

    thanks

  2. you could always bum a ride from a snowmobiler up to the lunch counter...some of those guys aren't too bad

as dr crash said the ranger station would have the most updated info. they send people up almost everyday and always make it up for the weekends.

be careful about parking in the road. i think they towed a couple of people last year.

  3. during drivers ed we were practicing passing on an empty road, we would change lanes, accelerate, and change back. a cop pulled up on me while i was practicing passing flicked the lights and siren. we pulled over and the cop came up to the window looking very confused and asked for my license (which i had forgotten) and what we were doing. the drivers ed teacher explained that we were just practicing and this was a drivers ed class (if he couldnt tell by the magnetic signs on the car and dominos pizza like sign on the roof).

pretty funny experience, although i was scared out of my mind at first. ooo.gif

  4. That is about 4 - 5 miles from the start of the 80 road. I am feeling pretty confident (brave) and would almost bet that the road will open up to Morrison by the end of the month (but you probably won't see me parked up for a whole weekend though)

    Here's to wishful thinking bigdrink.gif

b-rock: The trail up from Morrison Creek goes through a boulder field, which isn't very much fun. The trail meets up with the round-the-mountain trail and you can either head East to the normal Cold Springs route, head North up the SW chutes, or head West towards the west side routes, though the Crofton Butte trail provides better access for the West side. If you are looking to go up the Cold Springs trail i would just walk up to Cold Springs on the road.

  5. I drove up there last night. I was able to get about 3 miles up the road from the left hand turn onto the 80 road (tree across road).

That still puts you about 9 miles from the trailhead. With the tree out of the way you will probably be able to make it several more miles with a truck. The snow cover is very thin and rock hard, 6 inches or less. Rocks are already showing below the lunch counter.
