I would go w/ insulated super-gaitors *or* over boots. I also brought thin gaitors for lower down.

What kind of things would you like to climb? (grade/dificulty)
-
I had a Megamid in the pickets durring a hatch. I pitched it on the flat area of snow atop a gully and nailed the fabric onto the snow. I slept, peed, ate, and melted water w/o leaving the Megamid and so w/o getting drained of blood by mosquitos.
I just purchased (used) a Chouinard Pyramid. The previous owner would often set it up just for lunch for his (wife) and himself. I like these set-ups, esp for below tree-line.

I've already seen climax slides in the Olympics, Hurricain Ridge area 3-6k ft elevation. I saw these yesterday (Sun 1/16/05). Most of these occured in snowpack of around one foot.

How does that one go "If in doubt . .. . . sream and shout . . . . jump around and run about" . . ."
-
Shovel as stove platform: I've had the stove slip aroud a lot, so I was figger'n on drilling three holes and placing small bolts w/ wing-nuts through them to tighten the stove down. Anyone done this or something simmilar?

Old ropes make great tow ropes - they streatch instead of jerking the cars arround. Not so good used in a pully system to get the car back on the rd - same thing, they streatch w/o moving the car much.
I've used my lost arrow to skewer my oil filter so I could turn the damn oily thing. I've added a notch so I can use it as a bottle opener.
Old gear is still good to use when hanging gear away from goats. Remember though they can realy streatch when standing on their hind legs.
You can still use nuts as nut placements - sling the whole thing.
Old cams are good to use when you need to expand a flake to retrieve a good cam (placed/repositioned by your newbie belay slave).
Old slings still make good etriers and car tow anchors.
I can't think of anything I have not actualy tried, sorry.

Crust was walkabel, S aspects below 6000 ft. A good 5mm of hoar formed on this aspect in most areas. Watch it after tommorrow's snow dump.
-
Lots and lots of variations. Just remember, if you end up climbing 5.10 on a 5.8 rt - you're off rt. On Beacon bassalt I used a lot of chocks and a few friends in the inch range +/- half an inch.
-
Yo - PK, to clarify, what we slogged up on Price Mtn. last Sun was *not* walkable crust. As near as I can figgure, the slop should set up w/ 36 hrs of freezing temps esp w/ clear nights. I'm guessing things should be walkable Monday/Tue.
Interested in an overnight Tue/Wed? Twin Sisters, Cashmere, Baker S side (skiable?) or something else not usualy so approachable this time of yr.

Anyone finding any walkable crusts not likely to melt Sat pm w/ the 10K freezing level?

I just remembered what I did when printing up my "One Pot Gormet" (c 19xx) cookbook. We printed the book on an inkjet printer, then photocopied it on to the waterproof paper made in Tacoma. This still seems like a spendy option for color - and I have not tried it yet.

I'm still not convinced Nextel/Motorola porvides GPS for any phone (i.e. the i530).
My cell provider is Verizon.
Have you gone somewhere yet w/o cell coverage and used the gps function?
Also, give me the FCC ID# (usualy in the manual or under the battery).
I just looked up some data from the website at:
https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/prod/oet/cf/eas/index.cfm
then clicked "Generic Search", and typed in the FCC ID # to the two Nokia phones I have.
If I understand correctly, my old modle 3285 BA has nearly twice as transmiting power in Watts in the 800kHz band, but .1 Watt less in the 1900kHz band.
What about your cell phone? (give FCC ID#).
Anyone have a .8Watt cell phone?
Anyone using a cell phone booster (amplifier) or repeater?
-
I'm not convinced this creature exists. Nextell sells Motorola phones i58sr & i305 that look pretty rugged.
Any actual experience with one of these phones?
A lot of companies try to sell you GPS phones that require cell coverage to opperate, or they only allow 911 cell locating, usualy by cell tower triangulation.

With the closing of the Swallow's Nest, there are two places in WA to go to troll for gear and ask questions. The store in Leavenworth (not Der Sportsmann) and *the* store in Methow. There are good x-c stores in Bend, OR.
binding systems:
NNN - groomed x-c (skate or classic) - small toe bar
SNS - groomed x-c (skate or classic) - small toe bar
SNS Profile - groomed skating - small toe bar, small arch bar
NNN/BC - groomed areas and logging rds, tele turns if you don't ever fall and your ski weights less than, say, a pound - bigger toe bar.
3-pin - same use as NNN/BC, but binding is more likely to stay attatched to the ski, flaring oversized plate, however, catches in icy ruts.
Boots: For skating you want light weight like a running shoe, but more imortantly you want comfortable ankle support. Some "combi" boots are suitable for recreational skating and classic. Just remove the plastic cuff for classic. I find the combi boots' extra ankle support nice for classic, esp at the beginning of the season when my ankles are weak.
Skis: For learning skating, any track ski will do - 15 cm shorter than your classic (under the wrist) lenth.
Poles: somewhere around nose height? I don't reccomend tiny racing baskets, because, unless you do all your skiing at the Methow, you will often plunge your baskets beneath into unconsolidated snow.
Your first year, poles may break, baskets will break and bindings may rip out of skis. You will certainly trash the edges and probably the basses of your skis. Don't spend a lot of money untill you know excactly what you want. Boots, however, tend to hold up pretty well.
Unless you fall in to a great deal on used stuff, I would reccomend renting at one of the passes, or better, one of the stores. Salomon / SNS fits me best. Boot fit is critical. If you spend new, spend on boots.

Intersted in grade II-IV near the rd, 5.10 or less. The main thing is - I don't like heat! The valley was in the 90's this wk I believe.
Ideas - tell me it they would be "not too hot" (low 70's Farenhieght would be nice.)
Leaving Labor Day for a wk.

If you are not totaly apauled,
you are not paying attention.

What dificulty do you follow? Do you have a preference yet for one type of rock or type of climbing?

How about those fancy (tyvek?) paper printers that print those maps at gear stores? Who make them? How much? Where can I get one?
-
? So, color laser printers *will* print on the waterproof paper they make in Tacoma? (James something Inc.)
-
I wanna print maps from my topo program. I don't want the ink to smear or run, or the paper to disintigrate in high humidity.
8 & 1/2 by 14" would be the min acceptable print size.

I would mabey climb Inspiration. How about Chimney Rk?

See the recent post concerning the S sister. Memorial day we could start skiing above the trail but below tree line. My guess would be you can walk under the trees most parts of the day, but will be in soft snow after the sun hits it.

I would be interested in grade III's and IV's w/ brief sections of 5.10 -though I lead 5.9. Aid up to A2 would be ok. I would love to explore up Mt. Willson and into the various canyons - Oak, Black Velvet, etc. to do rts I have not done yet. Smith or City of Rks could be a good break from driving - or were you going to fly?
