  1. The sooner they all go to four cycle engines a lot of these problems you legitimate backcountry users have about them will go away.

The particular type of socioeconomic culture that gives rise to ORV's as recreation, never.

They get taken care of by natural selection (Avalanche deaths by snoriders now surpass skier deaths)not that that's a good thing-

or as follows, from my youth, a regular dialog over the evening newspaper.

(spoken with that lilting Scandinavian tone, ala "Fargo")

Dad: "Oh, that's too bad, now, isn't it?"

    Mom: "Now what is?"

Dad: "Oh, here is another, a snowmachiner, he run his snowmachine into de trees there outside a Gwuinn, on his way home from da bar there. Oh."

Mom: "Now, that, sad, eh. So sad."

Dad: "Sure, now, here, the sherrif, he says he musta been going eighty,ninety..."

    Mom: "Jeez."

    Kids(in unison) "Cool!"

Probably happened half dozen times a season.

  2. You'ver never lived in snow country, have you, E-rock?

DUDE, lighten up. Sure, snowmachiners are a particular breed, but they're expressing their interests in a perfectly valid manner and having as much fun as everybody else- sure, I don't want to see snowmachines on top of Baker I mean COME ON, NFS or cruising up SilverStar off highway 20, but a sled comes in handy for a lots more things than ego inflation by rednecks.

If I lived up in Nunakavit I'd want one.

I want my ski area ski patrol to have access to one.

A snowmachine is fun when you're on it, too.

Lots of time saved on the approach (personally, no thanks, 'im skiing in)

Of course, this is coming from someone who, when the skidoo rolls over, thinks, "cool, we're rolling the sled!"

  3. Nice sounding ride, freeclimb- don't forget the pvc pipe skiholders for the back rack!

Riding a bike on snowy roads is FUN- you can do graceful tailskidding countersteer turns in slowmo like speed and never let your trailing foot touch the ground- FREAKS OUT all the drivers when you come through an intersection

certainely livens up the morning commute!

We also used to get away with sneaking our rides up the ski lifts when our buddies were working and doing some downhillin'-

  4. regarding liability in climbing related lawsuits, wasn't the sale of Chouinard Equipment the result of:

A client on a guided climb in the Tetons failed to doubleback their harness buckle after a bathroom break out of sight of the Guide?

...ironicallly, in earlier days YC was deadset against harnesses "Chouinard and others are positively oppossed to harnesses and such contraptions, but as a consession to Frost..." 1972 Chouinard Equipment Catalog

  5. A couple vague points about insurance, no specifics- If you are a business, Allison, you need to find a biz related trade or proffessional organization to join that provides access to health care- you can buy a variety of health care plans this way.

    Washington's Basic Plan SUCKS!-

It's not insurance, it's a leveraged effort to make insurers in this state offer health care- existing ins co's offer low incomers access to their plans, but like Mattp said, they've got a lot of hoops to keep people jumping thru in efforts to stop covering them- also, lots of the companies don't offer in LOTS of counties because they're already "at capacity"

It was a politically charged effort at neutralizing access to health care in WA state for uninsured by the insurance companies and a consession when ALL the ins companies said they were going to stop offering ind. policies-

now, they can still refuse many access to health care by offering this insurance "coverage" in WA Basic Health- but if you make more than poverty wages, you're not eligible anyway!

  6. ...did a training run up Mount Si in My Koflachs, carrying a rack and prussiks, trying to stay on route with the GPS-hairy routefinding-and gave my Gore XCR bibs a ripping on the crux of the Haystack [Wink] Viscious! My ti 4-section probe poles kept slipping, though, so, even though brought my peeps, we didn't have to activate it.

what did you guys do today?

  7. for people interested in finding out more about climbers' access issues at Vantage should take a look at FrenchmansCouleeClimbersCoalition, you can subscribe for email roundrobin type updates on the current climbing access issues there...

BTW, Allison, the things I stated about guns are sad but true facts, one any NRA member will shed a tear over, if it's within their emotional capacity.

  8. yes, firearms innude the bearer with leathal force, easily unleashed, Allison. they make it very easy for a person in a domestic argument to act out their aggressions in a immediate, detached, often fatal way- the most common type of firearm death in America- sad [Frown]

  9. These cartilidge rebuilders have positive and noticable effects in most people who haven't lost all the elastic cartilidge material. You need to do a consistent regimen over months for it to actually rebuild, unfortunately they are expensive and not covered by anybody's health care.

Also, taking Glucosimine AND Chronoditin in combination will have better effects than just one alone, don't know the ratios.

  10. All these thing being done before the age of drinking or smoking ciggs, there's when some really stupid stuff started. By the time we were highschoolers, though, we had found out about things like wetsuits, hypothermia, proper (maybe, just, not as messed up) climbing techniques, bike helments, etc, but the preadolescent/early adolescent adventures just seemed to come to the surface of my subconsious, just Remembering all these mishaps really made me smile and I just had to share-

I thought this might spur fond memories of childhood epics for the rest of the posters out here, maybe not.
