Callahans under Temporary Closure

Weyerhaeuser, has closed all access from the lower gate into the Callahans until about mid summer while they bring equipment in and harvest. Please note that some of our old contacts with the company have retired and we are in the process of building new relations. Please pass this on to others so that there are no missteps in the months to come.

Is access from the top gate still open or should we steer clear from there as well?

 

 

I will put up a notice at the local gym and do what I can to let people know. A lot of people have been talking about trips to the Callahans

Until they actually begin harvest, I think most of the current access issue will be focused around the lower gate. The upper gate is locked, but makes for a pleasant mountain bike ride along the crest of the Callahans on weekends (Sat & Sun only). You are sure to have the place to yourself.

 

I also recommend investing in a locking gas cap.

Locking gas cap, have there been issues with gas tampering or stealing?

I don't believe that the notion that you could legally access this area at all is supported by the Weyerhauser access line: 888-741-5403 option #5. It says that "the climbing area is closed to all access April 1 to July 31". Not that the lower gate is closed, but the actual climbing area.

 

You could risk it, but please keep in mind what Greg said about needing to build new relations with Weyerhauser. I don't think that thumbing our nose at this closure is gonna help much with that. There's nothing that says that they couldn't close the area off permanently.

Weyerhaeuser has started harvesting. Senica will be harvesting at the Zen spot as well. So there will probably be security on top at some point.

I received another call from them on Friday as has UCC.

They are definitely making an effort to work with the public.

 

I'm hoping to organize a cleanup day with them once they are done logging to help build relations.

The logging equipment has moved out and it appears the Callahans are good to go for climbing.

 

We've been parking at the lower gate and walking in without issues.

 

We expect that the gates will be open to drive in access (Saturdays and Sundays) from October through mid March as in previous years.

Callahans is closed again, this time for fire season.

Typically gates will be open with access to the upper trailheads once the fire season ends.
