hello folks out there.

i have been having a burning, painful sensation in both hands for a number of years now. this happens pretty randomly, and only at night.

i climb, and backcountry ski.

the pole plant motion while touring seems to be the worst.

ibuprofen does help. but i dont want to be dependant on it.

any thoughts would be appreciated.

thank you for your time. jonah

It might be worth a visit to a good orthopedist who specializes in hands. Though I'm certainly no physician, it sounds as if it may be neurological; while bone spurs (ostephytes) can cause a burning pain, they would also cause pain during activity, as would arthritis, rather than just at night or afterward. Arthritis can be quite a sharp pain, but is more often an aching or motion-related pain, rather than a post-activity burning sensation. I'd certainly encourage you to see someone as soon as possible, especially as this has been going on for some time now.

You don't indicate where you're located, but if you're in Portland, an excellent orthopedist is Dr. Ira Weintraub, himself an avid and active climber and skier. Best of luck.
