I will be flying in to hike Mt. St. Helens (already have a permit) and to hike to Camp Muir on Ranier on June 15th 2011. This is my first hiking trip to the area. I will be packing my crampons and all my glacier gear with me.

My question is: Do I need to pack along snow shoes?

june 15? very likely not.

but you could always just pay to rent them for a few days when you get here, if it has just dumped a number of inches higher up, late season.

But would we need something to cross over to Cathedral Gap? Camp Muir is our minimum goal for friday. We are doing MSH on thursday and I assume that we may run out of energy to make the summit of Rainier on Friday. I appreciate the advice. Thanks.

you need to clarify. At first you said you're doing MSH then hiking to muir-that is work, but reasonable for two days. Now its MSH then trying to summit Rainier. Unless you're in really good shape, most people would indeed feel bombed to do MSH on thurs and then go to Rainier and summit it a day. But if you're an endurance person then it may not be unfeasible-it would be about 14,000ft of elevation gain between the two, presumably with some weight on the 9k of rainier.

Just be realistic and it will be more fun. MSH is beautiful and will give you a great view of Rainier, if it is clear. driving to rainier than night (remember you'll have to go back out to I-5, don't try to cut up through the east side of MSH.. that road will still be snowed in probably-confirm before you leave) and going up to muir the next day would be feasible for just being in 'good' shape in my opinion. You'll feel tired from MSH but it isnt unfeasible if you're use to doing 5k gains.

Oh, you just said you were going to Muir before. If you want to go any further than Muir then yes you will need glacier gear and crevasse rescue equipment. What time do you plan on starting from the parking lot for Rainier?

Yeah... just saying you're going to "Camp Muir" says nothing about going past. If you were just going to Muir you wouldn't need any "glacier gear". And actually, depending on the weather, you might not need crampons or an axe. I've been to Muir many a time without putting on crampons or taking my axe out.
