Self_propelled Posted October 16, 2001 Posted October 16, 2001 Here's an idea. After the dust settles let's get Intrawest, Boyne, Booth Creek, Black Diamond, Outside Mag. REI, EMS, K2, and all the other outdoor big shots to go into Afghanistan and create a new economy based on Mountain oriented recreation. Start with a blank slate and create a kick ass playground. Thrill seekers welcome!! No liability lawyers allowed! Mtn Bike through mine fields, snowboard over bomb craters, climb around terrorist's caves! Quote
Dru Posted October 16, 2001 Posted October 16, 2001 I hear those terrorist cave routes are all chipped anyways. Quote
mikeadam Posted October 16, 2001 Posted October 16, 2001 Maybe jumping the gun a bit on this one? A sense of humor is a great thing, but the gravity of the current political and military situation makes this posting a little trite in my eyes. Here is the address where you can really go to make a difference: http://www.marines.com/ Quote
mikeadam Posted October 16, 2001 Posted October 16, 2001 Damn! Then there's Dru's constant rain of slacker talk. Good One! Quote
Self_propelled Posted October 17, 2001 Author Posted October 17, 2001 My apologies if I over stepped the bounds of decency. I was hoping to get some background about the country from a mountaineer's perspective. The area must have been explored by the European mountaineering community at some point. Are there any suggestions on places to look for info. I know it will be a long time before it is safe enough to travel there but I can't help thinking there would be a lot of challenges for any muscle powered recreationalist. Anyone done any guiding or travelled in Afghanistan? Quote
mikeadam Posted October 17, 2001 Posted October 17, 2001 "A short walk in the Hindu Kush" is a great read and Bill Tillman wrote a few pieces about travelling through the area. It has been a restless area for a long time. Quote
