mountainmatt Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 Went up there memorial day weekend, snow began at 3500, on steep avy gully to cross, the fixed rope is still in below glacier meadows. Soft snow up to 5500 where we turned around (too much postholing). Although visibility was very low, occasional glimpses of the glacier suggested that travel should be easy (minus the postholing). Both shelters at glacier meadows were dug out. Have fun! Quote
banos Posted June 9, 2010 Author Posted June 9, 2010 Matt... Thanks for the beta.. would snowshoes of helped? Quote
mountainmatt Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 Our group of six all had snowshoes and we were having differing amounts of success depending on weight. I was probably getting it the worst, actually post-holing about 3-4 inches with snowshoes. Another team of two was up there with no snowshoes, and they were postholing knee/waist deep the whole way. The only people that have had success this spring on the mountain as far as I know, were on skis. That being said, I think if the freezing level drops low enough, and you start early enough, you should have fairly solid conditions on the way up. The way down would be really soft though. If you head up there, have a great time! Quote
