My Sony DCR-SR40 does well in outdoor settings but does not work at altitude (I think the manual say's 7,000ft, it crapped out on Rainier at about 12,000ft..... works fine once back at a lower elevation).

Anybody have any experience with Flip or Kodak Zi8 at higher altitudes?

Based on reviews I like the Kodak. Your thoughts?

Your sony has a HDD for recording. In a hard drive, the heads do not contact the recording surface. They float above the surface on a small cushion of air, produced by the spinning platters. If the air is too thin to create this cushion, the heads will contact the surface, possibly even damaging it.

Get a video camera with solid-state recording media or old fashion tape.

I had an old mini cassette camera... It crapped out an Rainier as well.

I'm guessing your saying the Flip and Kodak won't work well either.......

Panasonic GH1.

Get a great camera in the deal. Perfect indoor shots as well. 10x zoom.

1080i to boot. 60fps at 720p for action shots. All with image stabilization. Manual Zoom while shooting with auto white balance unlike a lots of camcorders. Can set depth of field by switching shutter speed or aperture.

$1500 though... =)

Haven't had it up Ranier yet as just got it in October. Christmas does come early

Enjoy
