Hey,

Heading to Ecuador/Quito for a couple of weeks and I am looking for some information on a few things.

 

1) Experiences and recommendations for a domestic outfitter. We are looking for a couple of porters and if the price is right, a cook.

2) Where to buy last minute equipment in Quito.

Not sure what your objectives are, but for most of the peaks down there you really wouldn't need porters. The hikes to the huts on peaks like Cotopaxi and Chimborazo are pretty short - short enough that if you think you cant take all of your stuff in one go it wouldnt be unreasonable to make two trips. That said, it is Ecuador and if you are willing to pay someone to carry your stuff and cook for you, I dont think you'll have any problems finding someone. You might try giving Safari a call/email.

 

As for shops, Tatoo (http://www.tatoo.ws/splash) would be the place to go. Right in Gringolandia in Quito.

I´m in Quito currently. Climbing with a porter is a sad way to climb a mountain, but there are plenty of guided parties taht will do this for you. There are many certified ecuadorean guides that do private trips. They can be seen in the refugios doing everything from cooking, to assisting the client put on boots, harness, and gaiters. It´s rediculous.

 

As for shops, Tatoo is definitely a good one. Andes Sport, and altus. Just walk down Juan Leno Mera in the mariscal district. You´ll find what you need. For clothes most prices are comparable, unless purchasing a local brand that is a slightly better deal. But does sacrifice quality.

 

Tech gear like beaners, axes, etc. is more expensive than US prices.

We are looking for porters because we plan to be at El Altar for 10days (ish) and we want to eat/drink well. Since this a vacation as well as a climbing trip we are kinda hoping to enjoy ourselves as much as possible.

Thank you for your responses regarding gear shops. We wont be buying technical gear (hopefully) just the basics that we can't fly with.
