Planning on day hike from Paradise-Muir next Sunday. Can anyone give me a recent report? I'm wondering if crampons are needed for the snow field below Muir? Or, will hiking shoes and trekking poles be alright? Thanks.

Freezing level has been much higher than Muir and looks like it will be getting much higher from here on. Hiked up with boots on Sat, saw maybe 1 person going up in snowshoes (lol).

Crampons not needed, waterproof boots and poles would be nice, especially for the boot glissading down.

If I tell u not to bring crampons, it will freeze up, its always better to have more than less, as a death earlier in the year showed just below Muir and may have been avoided if they each had a emergency blanket at least. it sound like you might be a inexperienced climber, go to Climbing Ranger Mike Gauthier's web site www.mountrainierclimbing.blogspot.com and read everything. BE SAFE.
