Guidebooks vs Internet Resources

Recommended Posts

I made my first trip to Vantage this weekend, and, in preparation, was disappointed in the lack of guidebooks for the area... fortunately, my climbing partner found a fantastic online resource for the area, and we used it - with very good results - at the Sunshine Wall.

With that said, for the areas with both good online resources and physical guide books, there are, admittedly, pros and cons to both... however, the biggest drawback to either, as I see it, is the fact that guidebooks (obviously) can't be updated continually, and that online resources require one to print things out to take to the crag. What we need is a good combo.

With THAT said, there are some great guidebooks out there, but I would say it's harder to find good, consolidated, internet resources on climbing locations and crags. There are such sites as www.getbeta.com, and www.rockclimbing.com, but both leave a bit to be desired as far as comprehensiveness, reliability and user-friendliness...

The question I pose is: What is your favorite internet resource, and, if you think it leaves something to be desired, why doesn't someone out there (even if the someone is Petzl) compile a good, comprehensive database of climbing locations (at least in North America).

Thoughts?
