Papoose climbing closure

Is this closure still in effect? According to the SAS web site, the closure is over as of July, but it hasn't been updated since June: http://www.squamishaccess.ca/News/Papoose.html

 

Still seems to be a buttload of rock at the base.

 

Also, anyone know where to park and new trailhead starts?

I climbed there yesteday. the Sign on the base says the closure was through July, so I assumed it was opened. Two highway workers didn't tell me it was closed when I asked.

 

Park at the Klahanie Campground lot, across the street from the Shannon Falls turn-in. Walk through the intersection, and turn right next to the sign saying "attention climbers, Papoose closed on Blast days"

Hi there,

 

Tyrone Brett from the Squamish Access Society here. We are having trouble with our website host just at this minute so are unable to update our Papoose page today. We appreciate that an update is overdue.

 

We are aware of the stale information on the signs on-site, and have brought them to the attention of the highway contractor several times. While the blasting looks like it is almost over, and notwithstanding information from contractor staff, the Papoose remains closed. We met with a representative of the Ministry of Transportation this week and as a result we hope to see some rapid action on the signs as well as the latest indication of an opening date.

 

In the last month, because of the delays, we have discussed partial openings with the highway contractor. We have not been able to finalize an arrangement.

 

The fact that contractor personnel on the ground were unable to provide accurate information is all the more worrying. Not only are blasting times variable, but the ostensible reason for not allowing access is because of concern for safety.

 

We hope to have a reasonably clear picture by next week and will update our website accordingly (barring more complications with our host.)

Sorry for going in there then! At what point exactly is a climber in danger or interfering with construction? The trail and the base of the crag both seem well above any construction. I suppose if there was blasting, and debris flew several hundred feet upward through the forest, then someone could get hit, but that kind of thing is not going to happen during the day along a busy highway. As long as it's officially closed I wont go back there, but why is it closed at all>?
