Olympic National Park: Winter Access

Attention Backcountry Skiers!

We are working hard to get more winter access into the Olmpic National Park (ONP). We need your urgent help and support in the form of short letters supporting our mission. The timing is quite urgent as grant monies are decided on May 1st.

Currently the main winter access point is Hurricane Ridge Road, but it is only scheduled to be open from Friday through Sundays during winter. We have made good progress with the Superintendent of the park, Bill Laitner. As compromise to our requests, it looks likely that we could see the ONP extend the road openings through Monday for the winter period.

The main contact for this operation is my occasional touring partner, Greg Halberg, a board member for Friends of the Olympic National Park. He is spearheading the effort and has landed the support of the Port Angeles Regional Chamber of Commerce and local skiers here in Port Angeles.

What we need from YOU is letters of support, BY MAY 1, 2007 addressed to the Washington State Parks Winter Recreation Program from individuals and groups. Via regular Mail, send them to the following address:

Greg Halberg

1507 East Beach Road

Port Angeles, WA 98363.

email greghalberg@hotmail.com.

Please cut and paste the following link into your browser describing our goals in this project.

Sincerly,

Dan Kaseler

Here's a pic from Klahanne to remind you how important it is to keep the road OPEN!
