I've noticed that the most common put-down I hear used by the widest selection of folks is the old "people are dumb" comment (or one of its many variations).

Why is that? It certainly isn't very clever. It doesn't require any analysis of any situation to utilize. It doesn't really raise the person using the comment above anyone else. What is the purpose of saying it over and over again in any situation where people aren't driving, talking, acting, whatever in the way that the "people are so dumb" commentator thinks those folks should be acting?
