St. Helens snowmobile route as ski route

This weekend I skied one of the St. Helens slopes to the west of Monitor Ridge and east of the route from Butte Camp. The snow was excellent all the way down to the treeline and was much less beat up than the Worm Flows. There is a stream drainge which crosses road 81 .2 mile northwest of the junction with the climbers' bivouac road. The upper part of this drainage is a gully and a fun descent with some chracteristics of a bob sled run. It was somewhat slowed by tree leaves, branches and licens on the snow. Soon it will be melted out with exposed rocks. Near tree line there could be avalanche risk in this gully earlier in the season. Closer to road 81 the gully disappears into flatness (3120 feet,NAD27 utm e 560708,n 5110221) There are two drainages that enter this area. The one I most recently came down shows up as a contour depression to the west of a stream on the St. Helens quad.

Except for the risk of being run over by snowmobiles this would be an excellent ski route on St. Helens. It is longer with present road conditions. With the right conditions, (earlier than now) this could be a very good ski route.
