Day Trip Suggestions

I’m climbing on Mt Hood June 3-5 and will be driving back through Mt. Rainier NP Tuesday morning the 6th. I want to do a day trek in the park, but I will be by myself that day so I need something without crevasse danger that has a road to the trail head clear of snow. Any suggestions for something worthwhile?

There's always Muir Snowfield.

If you want something with more solitude, check out the West Side Road. It's lower elevation so you will have to hike a bit to get to snow.

White River Entrance just opened and holds plenty of promise. There is snow at the trailhead though skinning is not so good for the first few miles.

Pyramid Peak out of Indian Henry's is a nice scramble with not too much risk. You can access this from the West Side Road... about 5 miles in to Indian Henry's and then another mile or two to the top of the peak. Likely still a lot of snow once you hit Indian Henry's and perhaps earlier on the trail. No crevasses down at that point.

I agree. I've been out in this area many times in June and it's fantastic. There will definitelly be alot of snow. Last year, during the first week of June, we passed through on our way to Success Cleaver. A lot of snow indeed (Mirror Lake had just begun to melt out), but not so much that we needed snow shoes. Also, Tahoma Creek trial has been getting progressively more washed out over the past few years. This year there has been substantially more washout. See the recent "West Side Road" post.

Pic taken from Mmirror Lk. Pyramid Peak is on the right.
