marylou Posted September 28, 2005 Posted September 28, 2005 When: 7:00 PM September 27th Where: The Mountaineers 300 Third Avenue West Seattle, WA 98119 What: Jonathan Leidich will be presenting a Slide Show about the Geographic wonders of Patagonia`s most isolated area, the Aysen Region of Southern Chile. This modern day frontier has only been inhabited since the early 1900`s as the Argentine Gauchos found themselves with less open Pampa to roam. The nomadic life and development of estancias did not mix well and the gauchos crossed the previously thought, impassable mountains into Aysen. This last frontier of Patagonia is ecologically wealthy beyond belief with hydrolgic gifts that stem from the world`s 3rd largest Ice Field, South Americas 2nd largest lake, and Chile`s most Voluminous River, the Rio Baker. After 10 years of living in Aysen and developing the region`s foremost guiding service, Jonathan is here to present the newest of his exploits, The Aysen Glacier Trail, a nine day trek into the deepest wilderness on the eastern border of the Northern Patagonian Ice Field, a journey reminiscent of the gauchos first explorations.
