Anyone been on Colchuck "Glacier" recently?

Newbie will be on crampons for the first time this weekend.

I am wondering if Colchuck is totally melted out to ice or is there some (how much?) soft snow left?

Saw a guy going solo up it yesterday. Talked to him later that day but didn't ask details. If I remember right, there was lots of hard looking glacial ice (hard as in hard ice, not difficult climbing) on the right side and soft looking snow on the left below the face of d-tail.

It was mostly hard ice. There was snow up next to Dragontail by the Boving route but then you are too exposed to rockfall for my tastes.

We did kinky things with the chipmunks instead.

I was there 2-weekends ago. The snow reaches down to the moraine (there is a couple hundred feet of loose scree and talus to reach it). The snow conditions were fine - crampons were not needed (but I would bring them anyway). Ice patches could be avoided. Glissade tracks were visible from the lake.
