Anyone climbed Mcalester mountain near South Pass? What was it like, and is it possible to traverse down to Rainbow Creek near Bowan Camp and not have to go back down to South pass and Mcalester Pass?

P.S. The lakes at the base are great for swimming, but watch out for snaf.gifsnaf.gifsnaf.gif

Ya, it's pretty nice up that way. That was my first peak ever. I'm not sure I understand your question though. Why do you want to go down to Rainbow Cr? It's a thrash. If you just want to climb it, the best way in is up from the Twisp River to South Pass then to lake 6303 then up. You could scramble up from the pass but it would take longer. 6303 is a nice place to camp as well. When we were there the snowpack was still pretty deep and the lake wasn't melted out yet. We dug a hole down to the water near the outlet and jumped in. cantfocus.gif Made everything else seem warm by comparison. We rolled around in the snow to dry off. I don't think I saw my 'nads for a week after that.

Oh yeah, those lakes are my favorite... The upper one is 89 feet deep! (according to the WA trail blazers webpage) Anyhow I Guess I'm just interested in the route to the top of Mcalester from the lake. I climbed up teh rock slide on the Methow Valley side to an open area/pass that looked down on Mosquito Lake, but I didn't have time to go any further up.

Thanks!
