Peter_Puget Posted June 26, 2003 Posted June 26, 2003 Just south of I-90 and a bit West of the summit are some slabs (above talus) near the top of a ridge. I have reached them before by hiking up logging roads. At the end of these roads are a bunch of “Mining Claims” for crystals. The approach isn’t so bad but I was wondering if anyone else has been there and if they approached from the other side. PP Quote
chirp Posted June 27, 2003 Posted June 27, 2003 You talking about Denny Mtn? I know there is a gully on its West face that is a major mineral site ( Rockhound Gulch) but that is accessed via the Melakwa Lake Trail, you stay right of the creek at the second crossing. One could access the ridge via that gully but its pretty chossy. Mineral wise its really a cool area, a skarn zone where igneous rock has intruded a limestone bed. The contact zone has created a phenomenal zone full of Quartz Crystals, Pyrite, Garnet, Epidote, and a myriad of other minerals in "Vugs" ( pockets) within contact zone. LOL Im sure you really dont care but its still geologically a neat area. Quote
minx Posted June 27, 2003 Posted June 27, 2003 Unless i'm mistaken Denny Mtn is N. of I-90. Definitely some interesting looking albeit very chossy rock there. Pretty easy to approach though. There does seem to be some stuff on the other side but I haven't tried to get close. If it's the same place i'm thinking of I've stared at it many times and thought it looked interesting. PP, maybe you could clarify which one you're thinking about? There's tons of old logging roads on the S. side and the PCT and Iron Horse venture through there as well. Quote
Peter_Puget Posted June 27, 2003 Author Posted June 27, 2003 You are correct about Denny being on the North. I do not have a good map available right now but looking at topo zone quickly it appears to be on humpback mountain and that the other side is the Annette lake trail. Seeing that means that the way to go is the way I went. The rock is a bunch of slabs on the left side of a bowl. PP Quote
chirp Posted June 27, 2003 Posted June 27, 2003 Doh, my bad. I saw and focussed on the WEST of the summit. Not the south. Just did the silver peak loop via Twin Lakes last week and dont remember seeing any rock BUT I'll be back up there this weekend on the way over to Thorp so ill scan more intently. Again, sorry for the mis info Quote
Peter_Puget Posted June 27, 2003 Author Posted June 27, 2003 Back arouind 86-87 I checked out the large overhanging section of rock on the SE part of Denny Mountain. It might have some spectacular sport routes but since that isnt my thing I never went back. It is easy to check out and the slab below the roof is and easy scramble so if you are interested.... minx Posted June 27, 2003 Posted June 27, 2003 PP- i think you and i are looking at the same bit of rock from your description. you're right, probably best to approach from lake annette. Quote
Peter_Puget Posted June 27, 2003 Author Posted June 27, 2003 Actually Minx I mean to suggest now after more thought that the approach is probably not best via Annette. For some reason I was not remembering that the Annette trail was there. Here is how I made the approach (years ago see disclaimer further in thread) Follow well groomed road there are two old logging roads branching off to the left. Tale either one they are both locked. Walk or ride till you reach the forest. Now head up. This area is riddled with mini mines. Sadly a section of Devils Club remains as a barrier to the cliffs. This might have changed over the years but a trail could be hacked if the old one is gone. PP Quote
minx Posted June 27, 2003 Posted June 27, 2003 OK, having avoided the lake annette trail like the plague in recent years, maybe i'm wrong but doesn't it wander right behind that ridge? Or does it not go that far? Cripes...i need a map handier! Quote
Peter_Puget Posted June 27, 2003 Author Posted June 27, 2003 It does but the other way must be simpler. When I started this thread I thought that the cliff was east of the Annette trail. Minx - go check it out! Quote
