Kevin_Runolfson Posted May 26, 2003 Posted May 26, 2003 I'm hiking up the mountain next week and am looking for some beta on the snow. Are snowshoes still needed, or can I just boot it on up? Quote
CrazyFlattlander Posted May 27, 2003 Posted May 27, 2003 I don't know about conditions, but I am headed up solo next Monday 6/2 if you are interested in hooking up. If you go sooner, I would appreciate an update on conditions. Thanks. Quote
Roger Posted May 27, 2003 Posted May 27, 2003 I seriously doubt you will want snowshoes. I went up two weeks ago on mother's day - skinned up the whole way, but it was pretty consolidated and I don't recall seeing anyone wearing snowshoes. Lots of dudes in sassy dresses though. Quote
Kevin_Runolfson Posted May 28, 2003 Author Posted May 28, 2003 N98er, going up with my family on June 3rd. Thanks for the offer though. We are looking at Butte Camp route. Any beta on that? Looking at hiking in to camp on June 2nd, playing around in the snow there then on the 3rd summit. Quote
CrazyFlattlander Posted May 28, 2003 Posted May 28, 2003 I will look and see if I see a bunch of people camped out on my way down and let you know. I just got my slot number today in the mail from the FS. Now all I need is good weather. Quote
swissman Posted May 30, 2003 Posted May 30, 2003 Went up there on Tuesday last week (the 20th?) via the usual Monitor Ridge. Snow was great. Still a good pack above the treeline, but getting really soft and melting fast in the afternoon. Last week, you could still ski in and out of the Climber's Bivouac, there was only a couple of dirt patches on the trail (it is worse now for sure). Snow was hard enough in the morning to boot your way up very easily. No real need for either snowshoes or crampons. Take skis or a crazy carpet for the descent, slooging in half melted snow sucks! Have fun. Quote
