AARON1 Posted April 10, 2003 Posted April 10, 2003 I am looking for info on the Bailey Traverse. Personal experience, guide books or what ever else you have. Quote
minx Posted April 10, 2003 Posted April 10, 2003 the climber's guide to the olympics has a little blurb. It's well worth the time! We did this a couple of years ago. I truly enjoyed it. you can make some nice variations of it. The climbing wasn't particularly difficult but the whole trip was great! What do you want to know in particular? Quote
dkemp Posted April 10, 2003 Posted April 10, 2003 We did it a few years ago in September. We got on a little low angle ice a couple times that would have been much easier kick stepping with snow. Lots of bears. Really thick whiteout a couple of times, especially at Queets Basin - be expert at map & compass or dont go. Went down via Elwha Snow Finger - the river had carved a tunnel through the snow - quite hazardous to pass through but we decided going through would be better than going over. Note that USGS maps for that area are 50' contours rather than the normal 40' - makes a difference! It was beautiful in September but perhaps earlier is better. Quote
