  1. Looking for some adventure buddies in the Spokane area. I do some technical climbing at the crags but my goals are more oriented towards glacier mountaineering, scrambles, and some non-technical off-trail destinations. I'm experienced in glacier travel and have climbed Baker and Rainier multiple times, as well as many other classic peaks in the N. Cascades. Intermediate routes like the Kautz, Frostbite Ridge on Glacier Peak, west ridge of Stuart, etc... appeal to me. Have not been around the Selkirks or the Cabinets much yet but would like to see more. I'm a reliable guy in my early 30s who doesn't like to let a good high pressure system go to waste. PM me if you want to collaborate :)

  2. Planning on a Rainier climb via the Kautz within the next couple weeks. Just wanted to hear opinions on descending the route vs. a carryover to the DC. I guess my main concern is being underneath an ice cliff later in the day in the case of a Kautz descent, but I'm not sure how much of an objective hazard that poses these days.

  3. if you got the free time, take the WFR. the hands on simulations are worth it alone. listening to someone blah blah all weekend is nothing compared to doing it in a simulation. even if you actually remember nothing, it is worth the confidence of knowing that you actually did it right once in your life. and in emergencies, confidence and being calm about things matter more than any 10# first aid kit.

Definitely agree. The scenarios really help you get the system down for how to manage situations. That was the biggest take home for me rather than the specifics for treating this or that particular injury or illness.

  4. Uh... that is weird. Why does it spell out l-i-b-e-r-a-l when I write in l-i-b-t-a-r-d?

The supreme court has roundly rejected prior restraint.

  5. Cool! After a period of absence from CC, I come back only to find that the Libtard Parade has run its course and there is fresh spray! :)

How about a Bernie/Paul match up? That would be cool, right?

  6. Very true. I however strive to break the DNA bonds that confine me (I guess all I have to do is break a few hydrogen bonds really) and be the first of my species to be completely selfless, invisible, and will be completely sustained by air, perhaps through nitrogen fixation. I will defy human evolution and I will not film it or write a trip report about my transformation. But it is actually pretty cool, so I should at least mention it in spray.

  7. Sounds like we're on the same page then. I'm not worried about logging, just logging in adjacent wilderness-quality land that is not officially designated as wilderness. If none of the additions in question are actually threatened by future development, then I see little need for expansion.

  8. Funny, I was just thinking about this issue again the other day. I have preferred the status quo, but I have also read there will be a revision in the NW Forest Plan, and it makes me wonder how safe some of these places will be this time around. But maybe the Roadless Areas Conservation Rule has enough teeth to stop any hypothetical future development in these areas?

I've been on the fence but new developments might be pushing me to support these additions. Thanks for the bump.

  9. That is a very cool idea. I have talked about a Cascades volcano road trip with my brother, but we never seem to get beyond Shasta. I don't have any info or advice other than be careful, because there are a lot of cool things to distract a lover of the outdoors in that part of California.

  10. Baker is a long drive from anywhere except maybe Glacier and Maple Falls. If you wanted to work in the ski industry near the area you'd probably need to live in one of those 2 towns. And they aren't exactly Vail or Park City. The friends I've had who worked at Baker full-time and lived in Bellingham got burnt out after a season or two.

I used to spend a fair amount of time in Anacortes. I kind of like it there, but it is quiet and you'd probably want to take up sailing or sea kayaking if you have a big appetite for the outdoors. It can get a bit crazy in the summer with all the island bound tourists.

Is the Hidden Wave shop gone from Burlington now?

  11. The take home message I got:

a)People are upset about their netflix

b)If Obama were to suggest that he enjoys a cold beer and a hot shower after work, Ted Cruz would probably counter with his preference for a warm V8 and an ice water bath.
