The latest 10-day forecast for Darrington indicates very good weather for an attempt at Glacier Peak. The views will be great, the crowds will be small, Almost all the people who said they could go are no longer able. I'm almost 50 and don't know if I can get another crack at this. Who's up for a wilderness climb? Jim jimc@willapabay.org

Topher, If you are interested in going I am interested in having the company. Time is short. send an email to jimc@willapabay.org and I will send what details I have. Jim

I am not from Bellingham but will be up that way to make an attempt at Glacier Peak July 9-10-11. I've been planning it a while but a number of the people that thought they could go are unable to make it. It's a long approach (about 8 miles) to a fairly straight forward glacier traverse. One of the best views around from what I've heard. Let me know if you're interested. Jim Carney jimc@willapabay.org

Steve, I set a goal a while back to climb the 5 volcanoes in Washington State and I am down to the last one - Glacier Peak. It involves a fairly long approach (8 miles) but fairly simple glacier travel. I have been planning for the 9-10-11 of July and a number of the people that thought they could go are unable to. Are you interested in such an adventure? Jim Carney jimc@willapabay.org

I have been planning a climb of Glacier Peak for almost a year and many of the people who said they could go are unable to make it. My plan is for the weekend of July 9-10-11. Interested? Jim Carney jimc@willapabay.org

I am looking for interested climbers to attempt Glacier Peak around the 8-9-10-11-12 of July. North Sauk River approach. Disappointment Peak or Cool Glacier Routes. The first American to climb Mt Everest without oxygen said the views from Glacier Peak are among the best in the world. He would know.

http://www.willapabay.org/~ljcarney/Glacier%20peak%20invitation.htm Thought I would share a web page I made about my plan. At this point, from what I have heard, conditioning is the thing. I have done some occasional workouts (2-3 times a week) on stair climbers and tread mills. This week I was able to ride my bike to work 3 days. 7 miles each way. I have a 5 mile walk up and down logging roads that I've done a couple of times the last month or two but I plan to walk it with a back pack starting pretty soon. When all is said and done, I think a big reason I've been doing these climbs is to have a reason to stay in shape.

Very cool that people are interested. This is the first time I have tried this kind of thing on this forum. I have been trying to interest a few family and friends in this adventure but have had limited success. I still hope to have a couple along but I recognize that this is by no means a little family outing and so I thought I would look around for people with experience and interest. Let me ask that anyone serious about this send me an email at jimc@willapabay.org and I'll try to get a planning list started. Thought I would share briefly my own experience which includes a summit of Mt Rainier about 30 years ago, when I was more lucky than skillful; several trips to the mountains for a day or two of snow cave camping, Another attempt at Rainier about 5 years ago when I only got to the top of Disappointment Cleaver; A summit of Mt St Helens three years ago, Mt Adams 2 years ago, and a guided trip to the top of Baker last year. I've done some bicycling inbetween times. A couple of STPs and RSVPs. Let me know what the rest of you are used to. Jim

Does the time frame of July 19-29 work for you?
-
I will do that. I may go up to scout the area a month or two before the actual climb. My brother (who is some older than I am) has expressed interest but isn't sure if he's up to it but might join me for a scouting trip. From comments here and there I think the NF trail is better and people can drive to the trail head but I am not sure about that. I'll let you know if we go scouting.

Thanks for replying. I am a school teacher whose month of June is rather booked - not to mention a few family committments that go into July. I don't think I can leave any earlier than the 19th of July If you don't mind asking, What made you turn back last time? Jim

Great trip and great report. I am planning on trying Glacier Peak this summer and would like to know as much as possible about Disappointment Peak. I was first going to try that from the North Sauk river but then thought it might be better to go around it on the glaciers to the east of it. Your report seems to suggest that Disaapointment peak is a reasonable route. Can you tell me any more about that part of your trip? Thanks Jim

I don't know if anyone plans this far ahead. I'm an old man that needs six months to train. Anyone interested in climbing Glacier Peak this summer sometime in the window of July 19-29th? I am planning on allowing plenty of time. At least 3 days. Jim

Thought I would close this out with a report that the climb was successful, met a guy at Lunch Counter that I went up up to Piker's Peak with. Three more people were at the top before I left. A group of about 12 were between Piker's Peak and the summit on my way down. That glissade from Piker's Peak to Lunch Counter was a ride to remember. Once I had the nerve to start it. Now I think I know what "corn snow" is. Like a 2000 foot slide.

I have thought about it. I am wondering if I am in that good of shape. Mostly I am looking forward to savoring the time. Taking pictures, sitting on the mountain and considering life. Also, The forest service is recommending Suksdorf ridge instead of Crescent Ridge because of cornices on the East side of Crescent Ridge. I don't know if the Suksdorf route will take any longer. Nice picture. Thanks Jim On the road in two hours
