  1. Having used the MEC Brio series I would not recommend them for alpine goodness, instead I would recommend the MEC Alpinlite or Genie 45.

The Brio is much more of a hiking pack rather then something that you can really climb in. You really need to be able to remove the stays and plastic sheet.

  2. I just love having a great piece of equipment that I know has been designed specifically for keeping me warm and dry.

No reason to buy the most expensive, but I do use my equipment, relay on it, and can afford to put some money into it.

Will the wallmart fleece/puptent/puffy/ect work - YES! ... Most of the time.

I just prefer not to use gear that pisses me off, and the features, weight, and quality of some of that gear does. SOME of it is great though.

My point is that brand name gear DOES NOT have to be expensive (used, sales, ect), and most of that time it preforms and lasts significantly better and longer then the cheap stuff.

Sometimes the cheap stuff is great when you want something for just one trip.

But most of the time I would prefer quality over quantity. I think most people do.

I also hate the impact that cheap gear that breaks has on the environment. I prefer to buy it to last, or not at all.

But that's the great thing about the internet, the economy, and democracy, we are all entitled to our opinions and the numbers will sort it all out.

I do however have issues though with Wallmarts business practices. I would encourage you (and everyone else in the thread) to watch thestoryofstuff.com - if you assume (as I do) that that Wallmart tent will wear out FAR before my SD tent - it is a good, accurate, explanation of the impact of consumer goods that are intended to be disposable. It is a very good watch.

  3. I really like the new Cilo45 so far.

Carries quite well, good size, good functionality, good mobility when climbing/scrambling. I think the webbing used is much more supple then on the V2.5s. It is also much better sewn.

I usual don't adjust the strap arnagment once I leave the car, just tighten them ect as needed during the trip.

Prefer the 'strap-on' crampon patch over the pouch, seems more secure.

Size wise I think it is perfect for what your doing, might be full-to-bursting on a few trips but for most it will be perfect.

Overall very impressed with it, seems like they are getting to be a good streamlined pack that also is adjustable as needed.

That said, for daytrips I REALLY like my Serratus Gennie, the 45 does not replace mine, nor does it replace a 60+L pack when headed out for 8-9 days. For 2-3 days, it seems unbeatable once fitted. But Arc'Teryx packs do not fit me.

  4. Just saw a Duality in store - looks AWESOME. Lighter and seemed more compressible then my DAS, plus WAY warmer - seemed almost twice as thick.

The Duality looks like a great jacket, I might size down though. I take a medium in everything, with this one I think I might go for a small-even as a belay jacket.

Oh-and the hood does not have one of those rear cinch-cords. Not necessary but I enjoy the one on my DAS. Not sure why Arcteryx chose not to include on on their much more expensive Duality.

    Cheers,

  5. I just saw the ArcTeryx Duality Parka - despite being twice the price of the DAS, I was impressed!

Looks more packable and WARMER. I just wish I could justifie replacing my DAS.

I really like my MH Windproof Balaclava

    Pata mixmaster pants = awesome.

And most of the time I find a silkweight base, 100 weight hoody and maybe 200 weight vest+shell is a great system.

Most likely whatever you get will be great. These are just items that are really great in the winter.

  6. Give it a go. I'd be interested in hearing reports of falls held w/ the system.

The equalized stuff sounds like a pain to make every 3-4 feet.

    FF is fall length vs rope out. a fall of 20ft w/ 10 ft of rope out is a ff2 - a fall of 96feet w/ 48ft out is also a FF2.

Has to do w/ the ropes ability to disperse force and the amount of rope compared to the length of a fall.

The length of fall (force) is relevant, but not as much as the shock absorbing capabilities of the rope, based on rope out.

Depends how it catches you, but a fall onto your lowest lanyard at its full extension (say 3 ft) is a 6 foot fall. Which calculates out to a FF2.

If the upper one catches you it will be less - but (I bet) w/ a FF of greater then FF1.

    You make your call.

    Cheers, Rob

  7. -length of the lanyards has nothing to do with the fall factor

-How would you place multiple pieces - equalize them? You only have two arms on the lanyard.

-I heard of someone who soloed Dierdre in Squamish - they had 3 daisy chains, and pushed 3 yellow metoliouses up the whole climb and soloed the approach pitches.

  8. It might, but the gear that you put in - do you think it will be as strong as the bolts on Via Ferettas? I imagine they are at the very least using climbing bolts.

Do you think that the force of the falls w/ a Via Ferreta+leapfrog is going to be more or less then a traditional self belay w/ a gri-gri or cloves?

I wonder if the Via Feretta will not have fairly harsh falls, even w/ the screamer, and if they might not be harsh enough to pull gear?

  9. Hi all, looking to clean out my cupboards a little bit, get some money for school and pass on some gear to people who will have more of a chance to use it!

All prices are OBO and I can take photos if anyone would like.

First up on the block we have:

FF Helios Vest - Men's Medium, Olive Green nylon shell, 800 fill. Very good condition; just don't really wear vests it turns out.

    SOLD

Arc'Teryx Beta AR Jacket. Mens Medium, blue, Gore-XCR. Good to very good shape. Mostly used as a downhill shell as I find myself using paclite and a softshell in the mountains. I'd like 220 OBO for it.

RAB Summit Extream Tent - Good shape, relatively lightly used. Only issues are two patches which I fixed with the gore kit and seam-grip, otherwise in v. good shape. 290.

OR Fraction Jacket - this is the 14oz hoody from a year or two ago. Always ended up taking my down jacket in the Rockies. Men's Medium, Orange. Very good condition, two tiny (1-2cm) tears on the sleeve from sharp limestone. Otherwise in perfect shape.

    65USD

Jetboil PCS - In good shape, this is one of the pre-recall ones with the Primus burner.

    I'm thinking 60USD

Salomon Pro Rock Boots - 8.5 mens; these are Salomon's version of the La Sportive Trango S. A little bit heavier but all leather and much more durrable. NEW, just Nikiwaxed, don't fit me.

    50USD.

RedLedge WP/B Jacket w/hood - red, mens medium; 15 UDS/free if you buy something else.

Mec Micropuff pullover - well used, lots of life left though; 10/free if you buy something else.

Golite wind shell (hooded pullover) - SOLD

  10. Hi all, after getting most of my face burnt off on a glacier I'm in the market for a new sun hat. Looking for something lightweight, with good coverage, and preferably a dark brim and light color.

If I could wear it with my climbing helmet that would be excellent. If it looks great that would be even better.

    What are people using?

Fashion comments aside, I was looking at the OR Sun Runner cap.

    Cheers, Rob
