Congrats! Glad you made it. That was us you talked to on the way up. Doing it in Aluminum crampons sucked but the white out was the main reason we bailed. Just couldn't see more than 100ft and it was snowing intermittently. When I got home and pulled in the GPS points onto my computer it turned out we were only 100ft from the top. Oh well.

TLG: I used a Canon S410. On many of the shots, I bracketed at 0 and -1 and digitally aligned them afterward, then applying a digital split filter. And then tweak curves, saturate colors, etc. Maybe even some more drastic edits to improve composition.
I too have the same camera and have not seen colors like that since I used Velvia. Would you mind please detailing some of the above mumbo jumbo for us? Is all that possible with just the s410 or do you need after-market stuff?

Just think, now for societal cost we can always tell people, well, our other option is to be criminals or junkies! They cost the tax payer way more than climbing rescues! As climbers we support the entire outdoor industry instead of stealing peoples mail and commiting identity theft!!
I think that should serve as a reasonable justification for the government actually sponsoring my climbing need. Much like a methadone clinic, there could be a government store where Icould display my certified adrenaline junky card and have fresh gear issued to me whenever I want.
Yeah, I like that idea

Hey dude, I was the slow as hell guy you so enthusiastically chased down in the scree on South Gardner before we made it up that one. I was kind of beat after already doing the North peak but I guess I had it easy compared to you since we had camped the night before!
Good seeing you out there buddy! That is a cool area to go out and check out, not really on the way to any other objectives for sure.
How was the deli? The burgers at the Duck Brand are massive!

I just ordered my copy (Goldman) mostly because I pretty much buy every guide book for around here. I got it this week and so far I am a bit disappointed. The pictures are of a poor quality and as was pointed out, flipping the images is unacceptable in a guidebook. The route maps are really good though, very clear and you should be able to recreate these with Topo quite nicely. I have yet to test out some of the routes described however so maybe time will tell. At first glance though it does not look like it will come off the shelf very often. I am disappointed because I liked her 75 Scrambles book very much.

Still, if they make lots of money off traveling yuppies and turn around and keep giving to conservation, climbing, environmental causes, etc. and in general make more people fans of the environment, then I try not to get too annoyed. Lord knows we don't have enough 'corporate allies' out there.
It is obviously not insulated jacket season.

The funniest thing about the REI in downtown Portland is how the sales clerks manage to be both supremely soliticious & helpful, yet supremely ignorant at the same time.
Yeah, its like you want to get mad but there's no one to get mad at. Its not like its the fault of the person on the floor.

I am bored and though I'd start a new REI bitch thread.
I think its only a matter of a few years and this store will become the next Eddie Bauer.
The other day I went in there to buy a basic hat, thin one that fits under a helmet. I was told that it was not hat season and that all the winter gear had been on sale, etc...
I tried to explain that this is not "winter" gear but to no avail.
I hate their so-called retail "seasons". Ever try to buy a bike tire in November? Sorry, its not bike "season". With a store the size that it is in Seattle, there is no excuse to be out of stock on something.

Well I usually agree that they get it wrong but in this case I think everyone would agree that what they were doing may not have been an example of trained climbing, it was most certainly not an example of hiking either.
It was an example of climbing by non-climbers.

I got one of the nice and light gore-tex sleeping bag covers. No zippers or poles but at something like 14oz you won't ever leave it behind either. Just buy one of those mesh bug things that goes over your head for bug country.
I used to have the OR advanced bivy and though nice, I found it to be a bit much and slightly complicated.

Gotta like the new ones from Petzl. You clip it securely into a biner. I have the smaller orange one, its all you need.

OK, after telling you not to take the advice of anyone on a bulletin board I will now give you advice.
UW medical center used to have a travel meds clinic.
When I was in Ecuador a number of years ago I was cheap as well and waited until I got there to buy the malaria medicine. As you know, drugs are cheaper just about anywhere but USA. They sell them at the pharmacy down there. The drawback to this is I think it takes a week for the pills to become effective, leaving you vulnerable for that first week.
I had the yellow fever shot in the USA as well as all the Hep shots. When I flew into the Amazon portion of Colombia everyone had to either get a shot, or show documentation.
I was cheap but will not take that risk again. Just go to the clinic. I'll be going down there again this year but will not be going anywhere there is malaria.

No offense but trolling a message board for immunization / medical advice is pretty stupid. Recommended shots and malaria meds change from year to year. $65 + $15 per shot sounds like a bargain considering what could be the alternative. You probably spend that much on beer on a good weekend. You don't want to get hepatitus.

Thanks for the answers. Yeah, I realize there are a bunch of digital camera threads but I specifically wanted to know how they handle cold and specifically 19,000ft + elevation.

I would second the recommendation. They do great work and cheap! Its funny as hell to bring your gear into a store front that specializes in little girls ballet and dance stuff! I have had packs and gaiters and rain pants repaired there, all at a very reasonable price.
