    GPSs

Anyone have any feelings on GPS vs Altimeters. My Garmin Summit went out and now I was thinking of replacing it with the Geko 301. But, I also was thinking of an altimeter watch. My thoughts are GPS because I like the ability to place way points. Don't ask for the old summit beacuse it's gone. Whadyathink?

    FS Trail Pass

Does anyone know what happens if you don't purchase a FS trailhead pass and you get ticketed and don't pay? Isn't it still "optional" to purchase/dispay as opposed to manadatory? I believe it states you need one for any recreational activities when parking at trailheads. I never recreate when out in the woods. I only go for "religious" reasons.
  3. I went up yesterday morning. Got to summit at 6:00 am. Agree with everything Chris said. Just keep an eye on the weather! It's a nice to time go if you can avoid the crowds. Go early.
  4. OK, Seriously. YOU have to decide what is important in life. If it's your son or your carreer. If you care about your son, you'd plan things around both of you. He wants to do things that involve YOU too. Don't just dump him off at a job or consider military scool or a camp or something. Get out and do things with him. Take some time off or change jobs to one that allows you to spend time with him. Teach him what's up in the world. Then it will all make sense and things will improve in your relationship and he can avoid "therapy". Don't try and take the easy way out.

  6. Actually, with all the fresh snow, I wish I had brought snow shoes. We bagged the idea of summiting after getting just above the lifts Friday afternoon, after climbing through the snowstorm, wind, drifts, no visibility, etc. Another time, my cyber friends...
  7. Since the weather is probably going to be sketcky tomorrow and Saturday, should I reconsider going up the couloir? Is it a good condition only route? Thanks to all. You're awesome.
  8. Thanks all for your advice. it's going to be an interesting weekend on the mt with the recent warm weather and who knows what kind of conditions in the next two days. We will still get to the base of L. Couloir and take a look before making the decision. Having never gone up that route has just made me cautious about the attempt. We still can do the other routes mentioned if we will have to wade through soft stuff while being pumled with ice and rock. Thanks, ivan for the recent beta on your last night's climb. Same to you Billy and Rymand... good info. What's the general thought on packing snowshoes for getting over to Illum rock and across the Reid . I usually leave them behind.
  9. Thanks for the input. Hopefully conditions will allow a trip up the couloir. If not we may look at Castle Crags or even go back to Hogsback.
  10. I'm going to be taking two others up Leothold Couloir on Saturday after spending Friday night at Ilum saddle. Has anyone heard what the couloir conditions are like lately? This time of year I'm wondering if a warming pattern is likely increasing us getting pelted. We'll probably head up at about 4 am. What is the opinion out there for roping up vs not roping up in the L. Coulouir?
